Randy Carlyle/Leaf Coach thread

Status
Not open for further replies.
Very concise article that should be fairly clear even to people who don't follow the team, or even hockey in general.

EDIT: Also, is Trevor Smith healthy?  The article says he's in the minors, but I thought he was still out with a broken hand.

With the Leafs in the top 10 now for draft order, I keep Carlyle.  I also use the Leaf's poor performance to make any deals I want to get done.  Now the question is if the Leafs could manage to draft a #1 center.

The musical question never gets answered  "Who is going to replace Porky Carlyle"?  Not Peter Violette please.

I admit, I don't have much of a read on Laviolette.  Anyone care to weigh in?

I wonder what Ron Wilson is doing these days. (j/k)

He's still hurt, the article is wrong. He was hurt December 17th and the initial report was that he would be out 4-6 weeks. Based off that he's still at least a week away, but given that we haven't really heard any updates from the coaching staff I'd say it'll be a little longer.

It could just be that reporters haven't been asking about his status.

From the press conference when he was hired by the Flyers:

?I?d like to see a very aggressive brand of hockey. Aggressive in the offensive zone. Get our D activated, get our D moving. I think you have to be tough on players. I want players playing hard. I want them running out the door and to play the game hard in a system that attacks the puck in all three zones. If you can get a team that works hard and if you can get a team that?s disciplined, not in the penalty box, but disciplined in their life, disciplined in the system you put on the ice. And if you can get a team that cares about each other, there?s nothing you can?t do.?

Basically, he's an attack-oriented coach. Two forecheckers, aggressive offensively, wants his defence jumping up when they can. Obviously, a system like that usually has some defensive struggles at times, but I mean defensively can things really get any worse than they are now?

That's true. But I mean it doesn't seem like he's really doing any on-ice or off-ice stuff right now. Usually the reporters would catch wind of that and somebody would bring it up.

That strategy sounds like an okay fit for this team, baring a few details that need to be fixed regardless (namely the defense).  I suppose it's execution that matters, though.

I admit, I'm a sucker for an aggressive forecheck.

They would probably get better to be honest.

This team will never be good defensively. They don't have the personnel. They have good enough goaltending to mask their defensive deficiencies, but only if they are spending less time in their own end.

The only reason you notice how bad they are defensively is because they are always playing defence.

I always felt Laviolette was a nutcase - but maybe I'm tainted by his Islander days.

Surly there has to be more people available than Laviolette and Maurice.

Just do what Philly did and pull someone out that nobody expects.  Enough of the recycled coaches, let's get some new blood going.

Agreed. Even if he's just a place-sitter.

It's tough to hire a new coach mid-season. Most guys you would want to talk to are coaching somewhere else, whether it be as an assistant in the NHL or head coach in the AHL or juniors. And it's pretty rare for an organization to allow an asset like that to leave mid-season.

So if Laviolette isn't the way to go, the Leafs would likely just promote from within on an intern basis. I'd be fine with Scott Gordon being the coach to finish the season. When he was brought on with Wilson I remember reading a bunch of articles about his time with the Islanders and before that. It sounded promising. He's another guy who promotes a more up-tempo offensive style.

I'd be fine with an "interim coach" and if he amazingly turns things around you can consider giving him the full time job.  Otherwise you hire someone in the off season.  Preferably not a re-tread.  Someone that's highly regarded, maybe an AHL coach or a current NHL assistant who looks ready to coach.  Also preferably someone younger who might be able to relate to the team more.

I like the sound of this.  It essentially gives you two cracks at it, too.
