Who goes by the Hope_Smoke handle?

Not sure, but they're really just reporting the stuff Dreger and others are saying on various radio programs. And, they run a blog called Hope in the Big Smoke.

Thanks.  So those were tweets you were quoting?

Yup. If you're on Twitter, they're a valuable person to follow for this kind of stuff.

I don't use twitter and besides I have you fine fellows to filter all this stuff for me. Which I appreciate!

There's also a theory that this team is too young and inexperienced to be consistent for the duration of an entire NHL season. But I guess that theory doesn't permeate enough with fans and media. It also doesn't lend itself to the never ending criticism of coaches and systems. Go figure.

Outside of Kadri and Gardiner, everyone in key positions on this roster has played over 200 NHL games. Now, I don't know how many games you need to play to be considered a veteran, but these are hardly inexperienced players.

Rielly (35 games) and Gardiner (130 games) represent a good chunk of ice time and I am willing to let them make the mistakes you'd expect.

They don't really occupy key roles though. Rielly is the 6th man and Gardiner is 2nd PP unit. While they both play a lot by virtue of being defencemen, the Leafs could interchange these guys relatively easy. And anyways the point was that having 1 or 2 guys with little experience isn't going to make or break your team.

Hard to say Gardiner doesn't occupy a key role when he plays the most even-strength minutes on the team.

Even strength is not a key situation for this team. That's where they just hang on for dear life. Doesn't really matter who's out there, they're all doing the same thing.

When the leafs beat Chicago like they did and play with certain teams, I think they have the talent to compete. You cannot fire the team so its time to fire the coach. He cannot motivate them and it is obvious that he cannot or will not adopt the style of play to match the players He has. He plays Orr and sends Holland down. He insists on playing Fraser when it is obvious he has lost a step whether to injury or not. Send him down to get rehab. If they fire Carlyle they might be able to save the season and make the playoffs.

These players either are ignoring what Carlyle is preaching or just can't play the way he wants them too.  It is too hard to get a full team of the type of players Carlyle wants, so you have to get rid of him and hire a coach that can plays to the strengths that these players have; speed, hitting and transition.  These are exactly the type of players Wilson wanted.  But I would not rehire Wilson, but maybe someone like Paul Maurice.

Time to "Tank for Reinhart"

The Leafs were passed by Carolina and Washington tonight. A regulation loss tomorrow, and they could be passed by both Ottawa and New Jersey on Saturday. Another bad week or so, and they're likely passed by Columbus. They are in full free fall right now.

Forget the analytics ? which Nonis and the rest of the management team abhor ? that so accurately forecasted their demise; the Leafs have been outscored 100-69 since the start of November, and are failing on almost every basic level possible.

They can?t score. They can?t defend. They can?t make simple plays with the puck, and they suddenly look very much like the disjointed bunch that they were under former coach Ron Wilson by the end.

Their record the last 31 games, in fact, is worse.

If Nonis ? who ?celebrated? the one-year anniversary of his hiring Thursday attending this punch-to-the-gut in Raleigh ? can?t see his coach has played a role in that demise, it?s a bigger problem than simply an inability to turn around this season.

After all, giving up on young players like Gardiner and Kadri for their failures under this coaching staff could cripple the organization for a lot longer than the next 37 games.

Their development into something more is one of the few hopes the Leafs have that the future will be brighter, and it?s being stifled under this coaching staff.

Of all the many, many problems the Leafs have right now, that just might be the biggest.

Which is saying something.

The defence is shit, they are to blame for the shots, we need an upgrade and need defensive defence first to compliment Franson, Phaneuf and Gardiner. Man I wish Gill was still in his prime and here to play with Phaneuf.

@bradyfan590

How are the Leafs playing in front of their goalies? They're 25th in GAA at 2.98. They're 5th in even-strength SV% at .933.

@bradyfan590

Leafs PK is 76.9% this season w/ Reimer/Bernier, Wilson's last full season in 10/11 w/ Giguere/Gustavsson, they were 77.2%. That's bonkers.

@FAN590Walker

#BradyandWalker - I talked to a member of #Islanders and #Hurricanes last night about playing #Leafs. (last two opponents). Similar message:

@FAN590Walker

"You don't have to worry about bottom 6" and "The system they play, they're constantly out of position -easy to pick apart"

I can't believe the media isn't making more of a big deal about how bad the PK is.

yes it is awful, if is any consulation. Bozak should never of been called for goalie interference and a 5 -3 normally teams will get scored on. The PP has been awful also. Just fire Carlyle.
