Ranking Prospects 2020-2021

20. Denis Malgin
19. Dmitri Ovchinnikov

Smol guys. Ovchinnikov is getting a lot of runway from his KHL club, getting buddied up with two 20-year olds and playing significant TOI in the MHL. He'll be getting little bits of KHL time with his current linemates (they like to call up MHL-dominant lines, a la Korshkov). He's crushing the weaker half of the MHL and doing alright against the stronger half. There's a lot there to build off of, especially when he starts to gain mass and strength. This is an Semyon-Der-Arguchintsev style pick: super young for the draft, size-deficient, oodles of raw skill.
 
They say pretty specifically it is a case of two players trending in different directions. Malgin has more NHL games to his name than anyone but the big three at the top of the board and is younger than Korshkov, and the free guy we picked up, developed, and traded to get him.
 
I'm really not banking on Malgin being a NHL player, but it's a little funny how completely written off he's become. I mean he's only 23 years old. He's a month younger than Dermott and has played more NHL games than him and everyone still thinks Dermott is still developing (and yes he certainly can still be). As herman pointed out, he's younger than Korkshkov. When Travis Boyd signed some people were penciling him into the line-up or saying that he had a legitimate chance to play and he's 3.5 years older than Malgin and played half the NHL games he has. He's younger than both Mikheyev and Barabanov were/are when they crossed the pond.

If we signed another 23-year old player out of Switzerland who scored at a PPG pace and led his team in scoring last season (like Malgin is right now, in admittedly only 14 games) he'd probably get more hype.

I actually wouldn't be completely stunned if someone plucked him off waivers.

Well said. Dubas didn't trade for him if he didn't believe he had higher upside then Marchment. Depending how they work out these expanded rosters/taxi squads I could see someone grabbing him and a guy like Brooks too.

Malgin should probably be ahead of some of these guys, but because he's a bit older and put up no points with Tavares-Nylander in 2 games, he's trash.

And there he is, grouped with Ovchinnikov, but ahead due to more familiarity, but trending down due to apparent lack of leaps forward in development, especially when he's often mentally grouped with PeterBro Nick Robertson who is already knocking on the NHL roster's door. I see Semyon Der-Arguchintsev as a long-term project, with way more runway than Brooks and no apparent room in the NHL top-6 (until Marner fully prices himself out?).

Joey Anderson is the new hotness, but destined for third-line energy. He was #10 on the NJD T25U25. He's a character pick-up with the requisite skillset that we're getting at very nearly the ground floor. Would I prefer Johnsson? Yes. In this cap environment? I think it's a fair trade.

This chunk is the tier of assured NHL time (eventually, if not already).

Liljegren was a top D in the AHL on a messy team and made significant strides on his defensive game. The development track is to lay his offense back on without sacrificing those new gains. He is well suited to Keefe's style of activated defense.

Hallander looks like the 3C of the near future (sorry Brooks) who just needs a bit of NZ transition help (plenty of wingers can help there).

Dermott is about to step into a make-or-break campaign, while his usual play slot is currently hella crammed. Let's see how he adapts to the right-side. Ideally, he turns into a homegrown TJ Brodie. Worst case would be losing him to Seattle and seeing him soar on their top pair the way Washington watched Schmidt do for Vegas.

I know he is not playing in the best league but he sure has some nice moves and seems to have good speed. Could be a find, looks like he plays the right side as well.  Like to see him on the Marlies as soon as they start up.

I don't know that Amirov would've debuted this high in a public ranking if it weren't for the weird draft schedule due to the pandemic and the elevated opportunity he received while veteran KHL players were unfit to play for whatever reason. He is coming in as the 3rd in this third tier of bluechip prospects due to fans knowing the least about him relative to the other two.

For whatever its worth (shouldn't be too much), I think he's an Almost-Nylander.

Sounds to me like he'd be a 3C at worst and potential poor man's top line player. Hoping he slots in as a good 2C. Apparently he also plays a lot of PK. Dying to see Russia/Finland games at the WJC.
