The Doughty situation

Crass in that Semin alone is a snub and Green is considered an integral part of the team, a twofer if you will...

I'm still not entirely sure of the point you're trying to make. Semin's probably gone from Washington after the year anyway and I think most people would agree that Doughty is a substantial upgrade on Green so I still don't know why Washington wouldn't make the offer.

If that was last year I'd probably agree with you.

He still had a pretty good season last year. Top 25 in the league in scoring among defensemen and top 5 in terms of TOI/G.

I mean, unless you're saying that his second year was a fluke I'm not really sure it should matter a great deal.

'Pretty good' is fair but also challengeable, he's not Duncan Keith quite yet.

Not sure how you get 'his second year was a fluke' from what I said.

Right so Semin's a sucker offer and Green won't get it done either so why insult your own player (Green) if you know it won't happen?

I guess, although he and Keith had pretty similar years stats-wise last year.

Because you seem to not be willing to pay him at a level that would indicate that his second year is a genuine reflection of the value he can bring to a team and the level he'll play at.

Seems moot now anyways as he just got a mega deal that pays him more than Duncan Keith anyway.

Both players were just examples of the players Washington could offer as centrepieces, not as straight up one for ones. They could have even offered up both.

Yeah if true that's a mega deal allright, though, Keith is due over 57mil in the next 8 years...

Ediot to add, I'm sorry rumham... rumham!!

It'll be interesting to see how it gets structured. Obviously there's reason to think that Doughty gets it front-loaded as well but if they already caved on the Kopitar thing Doughty may give them a break there.

He gets 200k more a year AAV and gives them another year.

Was that worth him missing camp from either of their perspectives?

Maybe there was more to it, regarding front loading or NTCs and such.. but at a glance it seems like they were pretty close all along.

Sounds like Lombardi caved on what he said, I would have let him sit. I wouldn't have gone back on my word not to pay him more than Kopitar. But whatever, bluffs don't always work I guess.

Doughty's a pretty good player but holy smokes, is he THAT good? (Legitimate question)

I think it probably speaks to the pressure Lombardi's under to have a successful season this year. It's all well and good to say you'd stand firm on it but I don't think Lombardi could let the season get away from him.

Having seen him play in person many times, yes he is.

Stevie Y put him on the Canadian Olympic team at age 20, not too many players can say that.

That was fast.  Just got an email from the Kings with the announcement and convenient links to purchase tickets.  Chalk one up for the speed of the marketing dept.

Doughty discusses his new contract.

No doubt it was the pressure, I guess that's just a personal thing with me, I try not to say things that I'm not prepared to follow through on. I'm sure Kopitar doesn't care, maybe.

Nobody is doubting this guy is a world class player, or at least he will be, but man, like somebody said before, if all this was over 200k a year, missing training camp only hurt the team. I don't think 200k was worth a hold out of camp and I put that on both sides of that negotiation. Maybe things gave on Doughty's side as well and he was looking for a whole lot more.

There was a rule that no one would be signed for more than Alfie was making for a long time.

If I remember correctly, Wade Redden broke that rule.

Good luck, LA.

I don't see this as a loss for Lombardi.  Doughty wanted a deal that brought him right to his UFA year (a 4-year deal, right?).  He got an 8-year deal.  Lombardi only paid 200K more for those extra 4 UFA years.  We'll never know, but ignoring the possibility of injury, I'll bet Doughty would have wound up with more cash if he had taken a 4-year $5-6million/year deal.  In other words, in 4 years as a UFA, he'd garner more than $1-2 million more for those extra 4 UFA years.  In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he got $3+ million more -- $10 million per year ... I mean Richards starts out at $12 million per year, doesn't he and Doughty might be quite a bit more valuable at 25, heading in to his prime as possibly the best defenseman in the league.

No matter how good Doughty is, he won't get much more than 7M/year, even as a UFA so I'm not sure how much money he is leaving on the table.
