The Official 2011/2012 Armchair GM thread

[frustration]Is there any way that Armstrong can be traded to Pittsburgh for a draft pick??  Sid likes him.

That $3 MIL 3rd line winger is looking expensive still now that Frattin is on the team for less than a $1 MIL ($962,500).[/frustration]

2nd rounder at best (maybe 3rd) if there is any interest but they have talbot.  It is a good way to free up salary if we can land Getzlaf (I CAN DREAM DAMNIT!)

The other night, it was mentioned that Clarke MacArthur is garnering a fair bit of interest. It was also suggested he could be moved for a draft pick to free up money for a larger ticket player. Anyone see fit anywhere?

I think Clarke is the type of player that could slide into just about any line-up. I guess if it was a draft pick you're getting back, you'd want to trade with a team that is hovering around a playoff spot, but who you don't think will make it in the end, so that you gamble on how high the draft pick will be.

I would prefer to put him into a bigger package for a top player though.

You would, but Burke would get the top player for just Clarke.  :)

I'm being completely fictitious here, but does anyone consider trading Lupul?  Obviously, it's a career season for a 28 year old guy.  Signed to a reasonable contract for one more year, at which point he becomes a UFA as a 29/30 year old.  Lupul is probably the team MVP this year.  However, he could probably pull in some major assets from a contending team, maybe something in the Young Player + Top Prosepect + 1'st Rd pick variety.

If Burke goes balls-out to find the 1A centre and maybe a top-flight goalie, does anyone consider moving Lupul at the deadline?

Absolutely! Sorry, LHF.

I think you have to seriously consider that if the Leafs are out of the race by the trade deadline.

It would suck to have to do it but you're 100% correct, Lupul is having a career year and could pull in a lot at the trading deadline.

I'm tempted to say yes because I agree with the seeming consensus that he could fetch a fair price. That said, I think you have to be a little careful about that because of the way he's affected Kessel. After years of playing with pretty lousy linemates the Leafs finally find someone who clicks with Kessel and they deal him because they couldn't build a decent team around them?

You can still do it but I think if you deal Lupul, you may as well start looking into dealing Kessel.

At that point are the Leafs not at the start of rebuild again though?

I'm not so sure it's impossible to think Kessel can't click with anyone else.

Triple negative aside, that has absolutely nothing to do with what I said.

Yeah, I gave the statement a "huh" myself for the grammar there but it has absolutely everything with ehat you said. You just don't need to trade Kessel if you trade Lupul.

I think you're more or less there if you deal Lupul.

I guess, though, that depends very much on who/what comes in return and what other moves may have been made to lead up to it. For instance, if the Leafs bring in Bobby Ryan and then move Lupul or, if he moves Lupul as part of a package for Getzlaf (not that I expect either to happen), then I don't think that's moving towards a rebuild, but rather, it's a reallocation of cap dollars. If he's moved out purely for picks and prospects, then, yeah, might as well look at shipping just about everyone out.

Even then, I'm not sure I agree. Picks/Prospects (futures) acquired in a deal for Lupul could also be spun into something bigger in the off-season, right?

Sure, but, that's putting too much focus on being able to make another trade that brings in an impact player. It's putting too much of your plans in the hands of someone outside your organization - and, that's just not a smart way to project things. You can't plan building your team around a trade you hope to make, because, that trade could very easily never materialize.
