The Official 2011/2012 Armchair GM thread

With Corn Flake here....Burke simply has to go balls-out for Parise.  He really doesn't strike me as a guy who will float after signing a long-term deal, unlike some others.

No doubt.  Injuries are the only thing that will wear down Parise. If there is one player who could reach UFA who Burke would do this for, I think it's Parise.  He fits all the criteria Burke laid down for the type of player he might consider a contract longer than 5 years for.  Plus the team USA connection is there as well.

Question will be whether he reaches UFA or not and of course that is never something we should expect to happen. That Kovalchuk contract has to be looming over the upcoming negotiations.  I can't see how NJ can justify offering him less.

Anyway no point in getting our hopes up.

Chris Kelly and Bruins trying to find common ground- but could be headed towards unrestricted free agency

Near the end of the article it mentions that the Bruins shouldn't (couldn't?) match any deal above $3M because of their salary structure.

Would a $3.5M deal make sense?  The article talks heavily about his leadership ability, his voice in the locker room and his 2-way play, all of which we desparately need.

The guys a bullet, a winner, a top PKer, and an excellent 2-way center who's a local boy.  I'd much rather invest $3.5M in him than say, Lombardi ($3.5M) or Armstrong ($3) or Connolly (I know, $4.75) or whatever.  Kelly doesn't strike me as the sort of player that is going to slow down anytime soon, he seems to be getting better.

I wouldn't be shocked if someone gave him a 5 year deal around $3.5M this summer.

I wonder if he goes back to Ottawa.

5 years would be pretty long for a depth player who turns 32 early next season though.

Team 1200 and Pierre McGuire talked about Jordan Staal situation this morning.

Pierre did say he doesn't think they will trade him but IF he was the MTL GM he would pick up the phone and call Shero and say "hey Ray, the drafts in Pittsburgh this year, we know it might be tough to keep the big 3 together long-term (all 3 need new deals in the next 2 summers) so how about the 3rd pick overall for Staal?  Assuming he signs an extension of course."

It's pretty much the same thing we discussed here last week here with the Leafs and the 5th pick.

Anyways, thought that was interesting.

Not to rehash old material, but I really, Really, REALLY hope the Leafs don't trade the pick.  Or, more accurately, I suppose what I'm trying to do is state the obvious is that I hope they don't trade the pick for a mediocre return.  I love Stall and what he brings, but the fifth for Stall (or Nash for that matter) is not something I'd be thrilled over.

This part is a major issue, especially since Staal can't sign an extension for more than a week after the 1st round of the draft.

From a pens fan:

Toronto gets:
Staal
Tangradi

Pens get:
Kulemin
Colborne

Yes, please.

That's an actual hockey trade.  Would be interesting.

Yeah.  Could be fun.  Tangradi is interesting too, he's 6'4, 220 lbs, and had a decent year in the AHL.  Then do the JVR for Schenn deal as has been rumoured.

Lupul-Staal-Kessel
JVR-Gabrovski-___
___-Connolly/Bozak-____

Fill in those 3 winger spots with some form of Tangradi, MacArthur, Frattin and Kadri.

Where's our goalie?  :)

Currently with Vancouver. :D

Some fun with recent tmlfans ideas and other jibber-jabber.

To Toronto: Staal, Tangradi
To Pittsburgh: Kulemin, Colborne

To Toronto: Schenn
To Philadelphia: JVR

To Columbus: Grabovski, Lombardi or Army, #5, and maybe a prospect.
To Toronto: Nash (and maybe something else - #31 perhaps?)
* Lots of ways to massage this but the principles are Grabo + #5 for Nash. - Lombardi or Army is in there to clear some room. Or, could be dealt with separately (as with the Komi's and Connolly's, etc.)

So,

JVR / Staal / Nash
Lupul / Bozak / Kessel

Deal Mac for another pick perhaps?...
Sign a couple of the bottom three FA's mention here, (ie. Kelly)...
Maybe sign Harding...
Deal with at least two of Connolly, Lombardi, Komisarek, and Lombardi...

Winner, winner, chicken dinner?

How about Lomardi or Armstrong to Columbus for Steve Mason?

Not that I want Steve Mason on the team, but I was surprised by how low the cap hit would be on his buyout compared to either Lombardi or Armstrong.  The following is a cut and paste job from Capgeek.  (Sorry that the formatting got lost on the chart, but the cap hit is the last figure on the right.)

Steve Mason is 24 years old on the buyout date of June 15, 2012, setting the buyout ratio at 1/3 and the total buyout cost at $1,066,667 spread over 2 years. His contract was originally valued at $5,800,000 beginning in 2011 and ending in 2013, with $3,200,000 remaining from the buyout year forward. The following is a season-by-season breakdown of the buyout. A negative buyout cap hit indicates a credit.

BUYOUT DETAILS
SEASON SALARY CAP HIT BUYOUT SAVINGS BUYOUT CAP HIT
2012-13 $3,200,000 $2,900,000 $533,333 $2,666,667 $233,333
2013-14 $0 $0 $533,333 -$533,333 $533,333

I kind of really like that model if it were possible. At first I thought it would be way to expensive but it's not really that bad.

I'd worry about Staal re-signing and how much it would take (5M?). JVR has yet to really produce, but could do so with a bigger role and some bigger line-mates.

Losing Colborne and a the #5 would hurt from a cost efficiency point of view, but you gotta give to get. As my grandfather used to say "you pay peanuts, you get monkeys".

I highly doubt most of this goes down but I'd count it an overall success (with some risks, of course) if it did.
