This Xmas could be better if Santa stuffs a certain piece of paper in my stocking. #whatcouldthatbe

As much as I don't want to give Wilson an extension yet... I still love this guy! hahaha

I'd love him even more if the sole purpose of that tweet was to freak out the media, which knowing Wilson is actually somewhat plausible.

I think Wilson has a little more tact than to drop a bomb like that on Burke. I bet he and Burke are both in on it and have some kind of a wager going on based on the responses.

Damien flipped out when he read that. Worked like a charm, Ron! Like a charm!

I not a big Wilson fan but I certainly have enjoyed how he has taken more of an aggressive stance against the idiots in the media.  Twitter has shown a bit more of a lighter side too.

Hope Santa brings a sense of humor and a dash of perspective to some of my friends. Merry Christmas to everyone!

Merry Christmas all. And yes, Ron Wilson's playful Xmas tweet is true. He does have a contract extension with the Leafs.

Good for Wilson, good for the Leafs.  Now he  can look past what's been done, and concentrate on coaching the team back to their winning ways.  Way to go Ron!  Santa Burke!  A very Merry 'Leaf'mas, indeed!

Well, this should be fun, but, let's remember, an extension doesn't necessarily mean he'll be the head coach for the full length, just that he'll be in the organization. He wouldn't be surprised to see him "promoted" into a front office gig in the next few seasons.

It feels odd to say this, but I like Wilson more because of Twitter. Good for him.

Me too. Anyone who can get Steve Simmon's goat is a-ok in my book.

Hopefully it's closer to mid-January.

Looking at it another way, this also doesn't guarantee that he won't be fired in the next few seasons if the Leafs continue to miss the playoffs. It's not like MLSE wouldn't be able to afford paying two NHL coaches at the same time if push came to shove. Wilson is still under pressure to put up results. But now he doesn't have to do it while being a lame-duck coach.

Wasted money but hey it's MLSE. I don't see Wilson making it to the end of his new contract (I assume it's 3 years) but what do I know?  Stupid time to give him an extension. If the Leafs miss the playoffs again under Wilson, Burke will look like an idiot for this move.

If Burke didn't have any confidence in Wilson, he wouldn't have given him a contract extension whatsoever.  The fact that he did tells us something.

On the surface I'm not sure what to make of it, I wouldn't have extended him until the playoffs were a foregone conclusion but then I'm not in the room with all the details. Seems premature.

Can we have something else for Christmas now? Please? That was like getting slippers...

does anyone else find Wilson's xmas tweet just a little odd?  it's like Burke was sitting next to Wilson when he tweeted it.

In the standings, the Leafs are pretty close to the line. If they fall short, what's Burke going to look like keeping a coach after falling short four years in a row or firing him and paying him another three years on a contract he won't have worked a single game for? Not good.

What was Wilson going to do without a deal until the end of the season? He wasn't going anywhere unless he got fired. He was under contract.

Is Wilson so Boman-esque in his coaching abilities that the Leafs would be in a terrible way if he left? I certainly don't think so. there's lots of good coaching candidates.

This is not something I would have done unless the extension is contingent on the team making the playoffs (very doubtful there's a clause like that). It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I'd like to see the how the Leafs record compares to the rest of the NHL for the calendar year 2011.

Anyone know a website that I can see something like this?

I just did it by looking at the Leafs record from Jan 1st last year on their site schedule:

41-27-11 (23-14-3-4 From Jan 1st to the end of last season). Good for 93 points in 79 games for 2011 up until today, not too shabby!
