Training Camp Thread

Bibeau comes from the french word for Bib, which is to keep stains off shirts or babys cloths.  So no stains, no goals and perfect save percentage forever. How are they going to broadcast two Leaf games at the same time. My split personality is starting to come out.

BTW, does Bibeau do anything but pitch shutouts?  I think he's going to go the year without giving up a goal.

I'm pretty sure I have Bibeau fever.

That'll distract the heck out of the other team.

I didn't watch last night, and he's only played 2 games, but the Kontiola experiment isn't going too well.

From what I saw, I found he wasn't really great or bad, just kind of there.  I imagine how hard it must be for some of these guys having only these games really to either make the team or not.  Carlyle wouldn't be the one who scouted him or saw something they liked to bring him over.  Nature of the beast though.

That's kind of my impression of him so far too.  He's not a liability on the ice but there really hasn't been anything that has stood out as particularly good or unique about him.

He's not overly big to provide a size advantage.  He's not fast to provide a speed advantage.  His playmaking skills haven't really materialized to suggest that he's a guy who could slide up/down the lineup in case of injuries.  His defensive play has been just ok.

He hasn't really done anything to differentiate himself from David Booth, Mike Santorelli, Carter Ashton, Matt Frattin, Troy Bodie, Peter Holland, Leo Komarov, Daniel Winnik and Trevor Smith (as in the established/projected guys fighting for spots in the bottom 6).  There are already too many bodies fighting for those spots and the unfortunate reality is that a guy like Kontiola is probably going to have to do something special to impress Carlyle.

Maybe he's open to a short stint in the AHL to try and get his North America legs under him.  It's tough having such a short time to try and establish yourself as a viable option.  Right now he wouldn't make my roster and I don't think he would be my first callup either.

**I don't think it is necessary to say it, but this is based entirely on the current performance over essentially a week of training camp.  It's not a really fair evaluation timeframe but it is all we have at this point.**

He's admitted he hasn't played well. He's having some trouble keeping up with the pace of the game.

Perhaps it would be better to have Kontiola skate with the wingers that they probably have him slated to play with, perhaps Komorov and Winneck??  Now that the intrasquad games are over  they need to cut down and develop some chemistry.

Well that nice to hear, a player giving an honest answer on his performance.

Forwards David Broll, Connor Brown, Jamie Devane, Greg McKegg, Carson McMillan, Brad Ross and Brady Vail as well as defencemen Eric Knodel, Andrew MacWilliam, Brendan Mikkelson and Tom Nilsson have all been assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. Goaltenders Christopher Gibson and Cal Heeter have also been assigned to the Marlies.

The only surprise there is MacWilliam, who made it all the way to the end of training camp last year, so I'm surprised he's being sent down so early.

edit: The list on the Leafs site doesn't have Orr or Booth, but I'm guessing that's just a mistake. They've left guys off the original list as well at first.

Oh good, Orr and McLaren survived the cuts.

If/when they get cut it's not going to be until the final round. There's no way they were getting cut here.

Which is totally ridiculous, I'd rather a young guy gets more of a look than two slugs like that.  The organization talks a big game about young guys getting long looks, and yet they keep around the bash brothers.

I get what you're saying, but I'd save my outrage for if they survive the final cut, which I'm starting to suspect that Orr might.
