Trouba traded to the Rangers

Wtf, could we not beat that?

It sounds like he wasn't interested in signing a long-term deal with a Canadian team, and also fitting in his contract would have been tricky. But the first part was probably the bigger issue.

One problem with those is that he played as if he was a 1st pairing D in NY.  That isn't what he is and will likely benefit from a more suited place in the lineup.

He?s obviously not a world beater or anything, but in the right situation, being relied on a little less and such, I think he could be a reasonably good 3rd pairing type. Obviously, not enough for a Trouba, but, not a bad trade piece, considering the types of young players/prospects that typically get dealt.

Admittedly I didn't realize his usage was quite that high but I'm still not going to hold my breathe that he's better than any replacement level guy you could pick up in free agency.

I would take the chance for Trouba at that price.  Maybe he just hates the peg.

Besides, he shouldn't be hard to trade for more than that.  It's like buying a dollar for 50 cents.  Even if you sell it for 75, you've made a profit.

Trouba wanted the New York/Detroit area because his fianc?e is starting med school residency and he wanted to support her career as well. Winnipeg did Trouba a solid and saved cap space as a result.

Should we believe that?  Why would Winnipeg intentionally take a worse deal if it was viable?

Well "better" is obviously subjective. Maybe Winnipeg really likes what they see in Pionk. Maybe they were less enthusiastic about the other pieces other NHL teams wanted to send than the other GMs were.

One thing that I think cost Winnipeg here is not using all of the time that they had. They should have waited until the draft weekend at least where all the GMs were in one spot to try and pit competing offers against each other. I don't see the rush in getting this done a week before the UFA period starts. I doubt the Rangers would have backed off or gotten cold feet.

So much for Pionk getting easier minutes. The Jets think they're getting a legit top-4 defenceman here.

There's also the question of draft picks that makes things difficult. After all, there's no easy answer to what's better if there's a package on the table like two 2nd round picks vs. one 1st or, say, a 1st(in 2021) and a 3rd vs. a 1st this year.

Is the "New York/Detroit Area" a thing?

It seems like a deliberate avoidance of Buffalo if you ask me.

Mainly one is school/work and the other is hometown.

No, I get it. If New York or Detroit were the only two places he wanted to go then Winnipeg had their hands tied a bit. Just struck me as weird phrasing when, as you mention, there are other teams in that area.

True. A team like Detroit for instance didn't have an additional 1st round draft pick and they maybe didn't want to use their 6th overall pick on Trouba (although I would have considered it). They did have three 2nd rounders though (35th, 54th, 60th) that they were maybe willing to part with. New Jersey is another team that I bet would have been all over Trouba and they also didn't have a late 1st but had weirdly the same 2nd rounders as Detroit (34th, 55th, 61st).

Philly to me was always the most intriguing team in the Trouba sweepstakes. He and Provorov on their top pair or in their top-4 would have been pretty amazing. They had some interesting trade pieces to peddle too (11th overall, Sanheim, Ghostbear).

Right.  In other words, the other deals may not necessarily have been better (at least not in the eyes of Winnipeg).

Sure. There's also going to be a little bit of CYA here where, as we can see in this thread, a lot of people are going to be asking why their GM couldn't beat this offer and it's easy enough to say to a "reporter" like Friedman that you totally had a better offer on the table so nobody can question your performance.

Not meaning to nitpick but that would be 2nd line minutes as opposed to 1st line he was in NY.  And with a better supporting cast. I suspect the role the Jets have in mind might also be a but much. Seems like more of a supporting 2nd liner.
