Reading some pretty nasty comments from Ryan.

Care to share?

Ryan said even in the summer after conversations with USA hockey he felt like the odd man out.
Ryan called Burke's comments of his play "gutless"
Ryan says Burke called him yesterday. Hasn't returned the call.
"You almost feel degraded," says Ryan. Says he has "to prove them wrong."

This is however hilarious, Ryan Kesler changed his mobile phone number and US team invited 67 year old Canadian...

Stupid that the US committee let those comments go public.  They're debating pros and cons of players behind closed doors and naturally they're going to pick guys apart in a frank discussion.  I'm sure Burke wouldn't have ever said that if he knew it would become public.

it is actually getting worse, it is slowly but inevitably being blown out of the proportion

Paul Martin and Brooks Orpik over Keith Yandle and Dustin Byfuglien? That's like, Eric Brewer bad in terms of nepotism. Behind Suter those two might be America's best two defencemen. Oh well, as a Canadian I'm thrilled.

Leaving Yandle behind is really mystifying. He's exactly the type of defenceman you want on the bigger ice surface - mobile, good with the puck and plays a defensive game that's more about positioning and intelligence rather than physicality.

It's pretty clear the Americans valued how well a player fits a role over how much better other players are currently performing.

If it were about merit and leaving aside past reputations, I think Callahan and Brown should have been left off. Stepan made it solely because they needed a 5th center. Orpik was to fill the void of an in-your-face D-man.

If it were based on who's playing the best hockey right now you'd have to think that least some of Saad, Ryan and Okposo would be there.

I'm sure Burke won't mind at all being called gutless, as he handles sharp criticism well.

How would Burke not have known? The reporters were in those meetings with pre-arranged access. Besides, it's not like Burke has been shy about making strong opinions known in the past.

I don't think it's stupid at all. There's a value in making the process transparent specifically so you don't get things like Lindros being made Captain over Gretzky in '98 or Bertuzzi making the team over Crosby in '06. Bobby Ryan's feelings getting hurt shouldn't rule the day.

Except it seems like common perception is that his defensive game isn't particularly good, regardless of what attributes it has.

Yeah I really like the idea of having access to these upper management discussions.

It's too bad it didn't work out, or that the backlash will cause it to be more trouble than it was worth.

I also really enjoyed the behind the draft videos the Leafs used to do. As fate would have it Burke got in trouble for tampering because of those videos as well.

Perhaps, though, I suppose I disagree with that perception. While I wouldn't call him a defensive stalwart or anything, I think his play on that side of the puck is under-rated because it's not flashy or, like with so many of the quieter, more positioning based and cerebral defencemen, goes unnoticed by everyone but his coach and teammates.

I don't watch him a ton so I don't have a strong opinion on it but I think it's pretty telling that his own coach has stapled his butt to the bench on the PK the last few years. OEL, who isn't exactly a bruiser himself, has not been similarly overlooked.

Sure, but, at the same time, the calibre of the Coyotes' PK over the past few seasons could certainly call his coach's PK strategy into question.

That or it really speaks to how little his defensive game is regarded.

I don't know how else you explain Blake Wheeler making the team.

Wheeler has very quietly outproduced Ryan over the last two seasons (combining this one thus far and last season) so it's not that huge a surprise to me.

Bigger picture is that a squad too good for Bobby Ryan scares me. Yeah, Canada doesn't have room for a lot of good guys too but JEEPERS.

Apparently the staff thought they would have editorial control over the article like teams do with 24/7. Thank heavens that wasn't the case.

Poile called Ryan this morning and apologized for Burke's remarks.

Ouch.

Burke being Burke, I guess.  His mouth is his own worst enemy.  Doesn't look good on him especially considering he's not even the GM of team USA this time.  Really overstepped it with that interview and the comments about Ryan, IMO.
