Burke being Burke, I guess.  His mouth is his own worst enemy.  Doesn't look good on him especially considering he's not even the GM of team USA this time.  Really overstepped it with that interview and the comments about Ryan, IMO.

I really don't blame Burke here. You really think he would have said any of those things if he knew he was 100% on the record? I definitely don't agree with his comments, but that doesn't mean they aren't commonplace in that sort of environment. I'm sure some people from Team Canada were making the same argument against guys like Hall or Seguin right now.

I don't see what the problem is.  They allowed a reporter in, but their job is to win a Gold Medal and that means being honest in their opinions.  Should Burke have not voiced his particular opinion on Ryan due to fear of hurting his feelings if it was printed?  His job isn't to tip-toe around each player's potential sensitivities to criticisms, but to help select the team.  He's there because his opinion is valued.  Burke would be doing a disservice to the team, to the other players and to the rest of the staff if he held back his honestly held beliefs.

I didn't realize it wasn't an official interview. I just read the quote. Who did he say it to and what was the context?

In that case yeah I don't fault him too much at all.

Two reporters were invited to be flies on the wall for all the US meetings. They both filed in-depth stories that essentially explained how the team was picked. So the comments from Burke and others were just things that they said during these meetings. Apparently it was believed that USA hockey would be editorial control over the stories by that wasn't the case.

Thank you for the context. I wasn't aware this was the case.  I take back my criticism of Burke on this one then. More than fair for him to speak his mind in a closed door meeting, esp. if they thought they could control what got out.

So how did this footage get out in the first place? Either way, I'm not letting Burke off entirely. - One should watch what he/she says because you never know...

There's also this:

FriedgeHNIC: Team USA GM David Poile is on a conference call right now. According to multiple reports, he has publicly apologized to Bobby Ryan for...

FriedgeHNIC: what was said about him in articles about the selection process. Also says Brian Burke had Ryan on his final roster.

Again, it wasn't footage. Two reporter were embedded with the management group during the entire selection process. Their job was to provide an in-depth look at how the team was picked. Burke's job was to assist in picking the team. He wasn't supposed to worry about how it would look in the media. None of the management group was even supposed to acknowledge the reporters presence. They were just flies on the wall taking notes. If Burke or anyone else took part in these meetings with a filter on it could have harmed the entire process on both sides.

It was. I saw the video last night.

Link? I've only seen the written articles.

That doesn't change anything I said though. Burke had every right to speak his mind openly. Had he tip-toed around the issue he would have done a disservice to USA hockey. You can argue that Burke is wrong all you want (I'd agree with that), but he shouldn't be at fault for hurting Ryan's feelings.

Don't have one but it was on Sportsnet last night... I'm positive of that.

Edit: Like I said, if it wasn't for public consumption it makes it better but it still isn't great.

Yeah I just found that too. That's not the comments that people are up in arms about. That's from a sit-down interview in September when Burke told a story about Ryan in his rookie season.

I saw that AFTER the 'Intensity' bit... I can't have imagined it.

I'd just love to see the video for entertainment purposes if it was recorded like that. But yeah I just haven't heard anything about it being shown.
