WJHC (World Junior Hockey Championships) 2015

Detroit's scouting and draft record has come under a bit of flack in recent years for not being as good as it's reputation would say it is, but they've made two pretty fantastic picks in Mantha and Larkin the past couple of drafts.

Very entertaining 1st period. A lot of scoring opportunities and some bad blood brewing between the two teams.

I always hate watching NHL right after because it seems so comparatively slow, even though it's not, or at least understandably so.

30 combined shots in the 1st period. Don't see that very often in the NHL.

Don't we watch that on a nightly basis?  23 shots for the opposition and 7 shots for the Leafs.

People criticize that Gauthier pick, but a big, strong C who can do what he does is pretty good to have if he can develop.  Been a long time since Leafs have had a big C you could put out to shut down the other team - and I think you can put skilled wingers with him because he doesn't have, say, McClement hands (or at least it doesn't look like he does yet).

I'd be so tempted to offer up Kessel to Phoenix for Domi. First big step in a rebuild.

Whoa! New Years Eve party started a bit early today?

You're right, that'd be ridiculous. Toronto would have to throw in a 2nd round pick as well. ;)

Not crazy about the pick myself due to not much offensive ability that we've seen so far and I think that has to with his skating. Needs to improve that which I've heard he has already. Time will tell. Good face-off man by the looks of it which never hurts. I agree with the big shutdown thing but most on here would probably agree that type of player could have been found in later rounds or picks.

Almost all rankings had him as a later 1st round pick: http://www.mynhldraft.com/2013-nhl-draft-prospect-rankings

Right around where he was picked.

It was a 20-player draft and the Leafs picked 21st. What can you do?

Don't disagree that he's not as dynamic as others on the team, but in my books, if you draft a player that gets selected for the canadian WJC, you can't say it was a bad pick.

*starts to look up players selected for the Canadian WJC team that didn't develop into anything, gets tired, does something else*
