Women's Hockey

Canada takes it 3-2 after the US scored to make it a one goal game with about a minute left. I think we got pretty lucky on that 2nd goal, seemed to me that the whistle blew before the puck crossed the line. But the Americans really didn't do anything in the 3rd until there was a few minutes left.

I thought I heard the whistle, too, and the CBC announcers were pretending they couldn't hear anything.  It was pretty clear.

The whistle definitely went..It shouldn't of went, but it definitely did.

What I don't understand is what the referee is doing skating in from the top of the circle on that play. What a horrible job of positioning.

Great game.. As an American I look forward to the rematch in the gold medal game..

I think that's as much of a guaranteed gold medal match up as you'll get.

That was actually pretty funny. "I didn't hear a whistle there... la la la la la la la la"

"It's so loud in here, you can't hear a thing!"......Heck, I heard the whistle all three times they showed it and my wife constantly tells me I'm deaf

Were they saying they couldn't hear it live or on the TV feed replay?  I had it on mute, but I could understand not hearing it inside the rink compared to on a TV at home.

Yeah, they were saying they couldn't hear it even as they replayed the clip several times.  It was easy to hear each time.  It's possible that they really didn't have as good audio on the replay as we did.

The whistle was so obvious on my end that I almost convinced myself it was a high-pitched scream from someone in the crowd or maybe a player.  I was thinking "If that isn't the whistle blowing, then what the hell is it?"

When watching the replay(where I'd assume they'd watch it on the monitors)...But like Stickytape says, perhaps the crowd was deafening them when they were watching the replay? Do they not wear earphones?

You go girls!!  Canada defeated USA 3-2 to continue their winning streak over the USA in the Olympic Women's hockey event to 18 games.  Thanks to Meaghan Agosta-Marciano's goal on a brekaway that sent Team Canada ahead at 3-2.

However, prior to Marciano's tie-breaking goal, Canada's Hayley Wickenhieser had put Canada back on the scoreboard with the tying goal.  That was fraught with controversy, as many believe the referee had blown the whistle before the puck got past US goaltender Jessie Vetter.  The goal stood and it turned out to be the pivotal tally for the Canadians.

Still, the game itself featured plenty of "see-saw" action, an incredibly fast-paced, exciting back-and-forth offensive show interspersed with plenty of superb goaltending from both Canada's Labonte & the US' Vetter.

That was probably the first womens hockey game I've ever watched. It was very enjoyable - a lot more physical than I would have expected also.

You have to love the Japanese team:

Major underdogs, but they have the best attitude.

Things really haven't improved in terms of real competition ... again.  USA outshoots Sweden 70-9.

Sorry to say it, but they really need to take another hard look at whether to suspend women's hockey from the Olympics until and unless the rest of world produces a least a couple of more real teams.

Should they take out every sport where 1 or 2 counties dominate?  Because women's hockey isn't the only one where a couple countries get virtually all of the gold and silver medals.

I'd agree if it weren't for the fact that there seems to be absolutely no criteria whatsoever for a sport being in the Winter Olympics. It seems like any humanly possible method of someone on top of a snowy hill getting to the bottom is deemed a discipline worthy of Olympic celebration.

Give it few more years. You do not have to go anywhere further than to men hockey tournament at Olympics. From 1920 to 1952 the tournament was dominated by Canada. Those teams hammered opposition davastatingly. They outscored opponents 110:3 (1924), 38:0 (1928), 32:4 (1932), 54:7 (1936), 69:5 (1948) and 71:14 (1952). Since early fifties several other teams has emerged, Soviet Union naturally, but also Czekoslovakia and Sweden. Later joined by Finland. But in general you can say it took the world 40 years to match Canada, which is questionable as Canada could not send its best NHL players to the Olympics, while Soviet union was sending their "amateurs". I am pretty much convinced that with Gordie Howe and company Canada would dominate 50?s as well as 60?s pretty easily. Only in 70s and 80?s Soviets became even.

But I see your point.

But the argument for a sport's inclusion in the Olympic games these days is about it being widely played to the point that it's broadly competitive. The argument that advocates of Women's hockey tend to use is almost the exact reverse, that its inclusion in the Olympics is necessary for the sport to grow.

That contradiction, I think, is actually hurt by the comparison to men's hockey in the 20's and 30's because I think it'd be pretty hard to look at those tournaments and make a convincing argument that getting demolished at the Olympics really did a lot to grow the sport
