2011-2012 NHL Thread

Punched Out, Part 1

"Over six months, The New York Times examined the life and death of the professional hockey player Derek Boogaard, who rose to fame as one of the sport's most feared fighters before dying at age 28 on May 13.
This article, the first of a three-part series, revisits Boogaard's childhood in the rugged youth and junior leagues of western Canada and his progression from physically awkward boy to renowned brawler on the ice."

Lots of interactive features. A great read.

I just saw this.  Looks like it will be a important series.  For the Times to devote this much effort to a sports story is rather remarkable.

EDIT: Just read the first (long) installment.  It's well worth it.  Some very poignant moments in his life.

Figured this was the place to put this, someone can move it if not.  Good on Paul Gaustad for his response to Jordan Tootoo last night.  Loved the fact that he jumped right in the defend his goalie and then took it to a whole new level in smack-talking Lindbeck afterwards too!

Looks like Niederreiter has a concussion after a hit by Fistric last night - looked like he targeted the head AND looked like he was in the process of jumping when he hit him.

Yahoo link with video

We will see what Shanny thinks.

That was absolutely disgusting. I wouldn't be sad to see Tootoo banned for the season for a hit like that.

Second installment of the Boogaard piece also excellent.  If anyone has any romanticized notions of the hockey "tough guy," this will get rid of them.

A high-profile piece like this will have some impact in the NHL head office.

It is a very good series of articles.

The medical research being done has also been very good lately.

You'd think with the above and the passing of Boogaard, Rypien & Belak, these things would have some effect.

35% of the games this season still have fights - it's not even at a low since the lockout.

As of the January 2011 NHLPA poll asking "Should fighting be banished from the NHL?" 98% of the players said no.

(10 out 10 fan comments below the poll said no)

The owners seem to like it or it would be banned. The majority of GMs seem to approve of fighting.

A significant portion of the fans still seem to like it in the game.

From that, fighting is going to remain a part of the NHL sport for the foreseeable future. Efforts will be increased to monitor and treat enforcers & exNHLers to reduce the chances of tragedies like Boogaard, Belak & Rypien. That would be my guess as to what will transpire.

I don't think we're playing really solid in our own end," he said. "I think that's where you can see why we're not winning. Those guys always seem to get inside, to kind of walk through two guys and suddenly get a two-on-one out of nothing. Even though we have guys back. It seems like we're just too cute."

Cuteness, apparently, is contagious. Hiller listed about seven ways the Ducks are failing.

"It looks like we are there but not really there," he said. "Physically there, but probably mentally we are already in the other zone or still in the dressing room. I don't know what. To me it looks like we get so many errors.

"Suddenly, guys are all by themselves in the slot out of a nothing play and suddenly two guys chasing one guy. We're playing here in the NHL, and I don't think it should happen."

I have not been reading this thread enough to know if the Tootoo hit is being discussed. He is having a phone interview today with Shanny. That means the max suspension he can get is 5 games because more than that requires an in person hearing.

Maybe I am seeing something different than Shanny because I would go more than 5 games on this one.

I agree with Ruff on Tootoo-Miller thing, it is a joke. I was outraged when that scum Hab elbowed Reimer and nothing happened, this was much worse. I really do not understand Shanny. MacArthur got 2 games for what, if Tootoo gets max. 5 for this. The League is becoming a joke, indeed.

On a side note,  how can you eliminate fighting from the Leage if such things happen. Supporters of fighting are just getting excellent arguments - if League can not install tough policy, the heavy guns will do. No-one can jump on your goalie like that.

Part III of the Boogard series is now out via The New York Times.

Quite the read and very well done.

Concurrent to the main story was another little nugget which could potentially have large repercussions.

"Len Boogaard, knowing that his son had been enrolled in a substance-abuse program since September 2009, was surprised to see so many prescription bottles in the bathroom with the names of Rangers doctors. He was also surprised to hear from his son that he had been given four days? notice for his next drug test."

Anybody who is still a fan of fighting needs to read this series.  Boogaard's brain injury had progressed further than Probert's at the time of his death.  Had Boogaard lived, he would have had dementia by middle age.

Read, and be unmoved if you can, Aaron Boogaard's handwritten police statement and the death certificate.

Bettman's prevaricating replies in the article are disgusting.  Most of the NHL types simply refused to be interviewed.  A complete stonewall.

If the NHL thinks they are going to be able to allow staged fighting to continue, they are dreaming.  They will start getting sued, repeatedly, and prosecutors and local jurisdictions are going to start stepping in and and getting involved.

I predict that within the next 5 years the NHL will be forced, against its measly will, to ban staged fights.  We are seeing the beginning of the end of the goon, the enforcer, and for that we can thank the doctors in the traumatic brain injury study, and families like the Boogaards for donating their sons' brains for study.

Prescription drug and cocaine abuse is also a risk factor for dementia. What role did the drug use of Probert and Boogaard play in the physical state of their brains?

Here is a link with a story that has Ruff's comments and a video of the hit.

Jordan Tootoo wants everyone to believe he was pushed towards Miller, with an "what was I supposed to do?" line.  Truth is, Tootoo nearly dove AT Miller, as the video clearly indicates.  What a pickin' liar you are, Tootoo.  Suspension definitely due up!

And he gets two measly games as per TSN.
