With the way the Hawks are going, it actually wouldn't surprise me if they fall in the 1st round of the playoffs. They seem primed for a major playoff disappointed. Of course, they also could sweep their way to the Cup.

If it was an 82 game season, there would be cause for concern, but this being a shortened (48 game) season, it's doubtful Chicago will be maxed out by the time the playoffs arrive.  In fact, it wouldn't surprise many if they actually did win the Cup.

Of course, there's always the possibility of a playoff upset should that happen.  Anything goes.

They need to go the entire season with no regulation losses, so that if they lose in the playoffs, each game in OT they can say "we didn't lose in regulation the entire season!!!"

It's not about being maxed out, it's about the pressure of the raised expectations after this start and the reality that, eventually, they will have to come back down to earth.

Most consecutive games played by a defenceman --486.

Most games played without ever appearing in a Stanley Cup playoff -- 735.

Poor Jay Bouwmeester.  He owns the first record....and the second not-so-proud one.  Ouch!

Note: Prior to Bouwmeester, Guy Charron (remember him?) held the record of most games of never having appeared in a Cup playoff at #734.

@KMaherNews12 DiPietro: injuries, losing and fan hatred over the past 3 years made him think about killing himself at one point

That's really sad, regardless of how much money someone is making.
DiPietro now says he was kidding and it was a joke.

Completely unsurprising a story of this nature is coming out of the Islanders.

I don't know whether or not you can take the retraction and excuse at face value.  I could entirely see the guy's agent quickly and aggressively intervening to try to salvage the situation.  The perception of physical fragility around DiPietro is bad enough;  it's even worse if there's a concern about a perception of mental fragility.

Assuming for the moment that DiPietro truly has been depressed and entertaining suicidal thoughts, from a PR perspective it's better to appear as a jerk who makes bad jokes than to appear mentally and emotionally weak, especially for a goalie.

If what's being referred to is the interview they showed on sportscentre I'd say that referring to it as "suicidal thoughts" or serious contemplation of killing himself is a bit of a stretch. It sounded far more like the sort of thing one says in frustration. I think Dipietro later comments are just an attempt to clarify that.

Really all this is is a case in point of how twitter is a lousy avenue for actual news.

Over the last three seasons, Sid Crosby has played in 79 regular season games. In those games he's got 47 goals, 80 assists and is a +46 while winning around 54% of his face-offs.

I think that if he'd been healthy over that span we'd be talking about him in the same way basketball fans talk about Lebron James and wondering if voter fatigue is the only reason he wouldn't be winning a 4th straight Hart.

I don't really hear anybody talk about Crosby to be honest.

Much like nobody would say anything if Joe Thornton racked up 150 points in a season, I think everyone is waiting for Crosby to actually play one full season before continuing the discussion about his greatness.

It's unfortunate but I'd be shocked if he made it to 1000 games.

Hawks won again, making it 20 games in a row with a point to start the season.

An article I just read said that if you go back to last season, they now have a point in at least 26 straight regular season games - much closer to the Philadelphia record of 35 (but still quite a ways away!).

the nhl.com three stars from last night:  Kadri, Tlusty, Gustavsson ....no idea how to feel about that :)

Cool but I'd rather have Scrivens. Tlusty has surprised me. Maybe he will be consistent and make something of himself.

The fact that the Islanders signed him to that huge, huge contract in the first place is the saddest part.

A goaltender who is injury-prone, not very dependable (due to his ever present ongoing injuries every now and then, etc., etc.), shouldn't expect the team's followers to praise him to the skies.  Considering all he has gone through throughout the years, one does feel for him, but, in the end, the DiPietro 'experiment' has been largely a failure in futility.

As an Isles fan myself, I've lost complete faith in the guy.  He should have hung up his skates a long time ago rather than endure the ignominy of being called a "has been" in his 'off again on again' nhl career.

He seems to be hitting his groove - I think he may be playing with Eric Staal, and making the most of it.
