2021 Offseason Moves

Someone would have given Justin Holl a $13mil AAV this offseason. Prove me wrong.
Hard not to think that all of these big deals make it impossible to extend Rielly. Any decent trading partners out there?

Considering some of the other moves they've made this offseason I think the Kings make a lot of sense for Rielly. On their left side defence they have Edler, Maatta, and some kids. Having Doughty and Rielly in the top-4 would give them a pretty solid puck mover on both those pairings. They're also set to have a lot of cap space next season with a bunch of mid size deals expiring for guys they probably won't bring back (Edler/Maatta) or will be in line for a pay decrease (Brown).

Ideally, you would try to model it around the Pacioretty to Vegas deal when he was a year away from being a UFA. Montreal got a good prospect (Suzuki), a middle 6 forward (Tatar), and a 2nd round draft pick.

A version here could be something like Adrian Kempe (would likely be required for cap purposes too), a prospect not named Byfield/Turcotte/Vilardi (Kings have a lot of options here: Kaliyev, Madden, Kupari, Thomas), and then a 2nd rounder.

This would also open up a ton of cap space (about $6mil) if the Leafs wanted to add another forward or defenceman through either free agency or finding a slightly expensive guy on the trade market for cheap.

Alex Barre-Boulet is sorta considered the next "Yanni Gourde" type player to come up through Tampa's system. Through his first 3 years in the AHL he put up 136 points in 144 games. He only has 15 NHL games under his belt where he has just 3 points. But considering the losses Tampa has had this offseason it's expected he'll be given a big opportunity to play consistent 3rd line minutes and if he's as good as his AHL numbers and Tampa observers think a breakout season could be coming.

He just signed a 3 year extension with an AAV that is less than his entry level contract. Like... why not just accept your qualifying offer at that point?

Feels like Villardi is probably the closest Suzuki comparison and, while he's obviously valuable, I think LA's depth would make him a fair target if the assumption here is that LA would really want Rielly as opposed to just being receptive to taking him.

Which, to my mind, makes a pretty big difference. If Rielly, and the ability to extend Rielly at whatever that contract would be, is seen as a hot commodity than you can get a Pacioretty like return.

But if the argument is that we should trade Rielly because he's an imminent free agent and we can replace him internally or can't afford him is one thing but if it's that we should trade him because he's an imminent free agent and he's not worth the deal he's going to be expecting people should probably adjust their expectations downward.

David Krejci will play in the Czech Republic this upcoming season. That's a big blow for the Bruins, he had a very good season this year.

Is there an option to fold the league and start things over?

His numbers have been shockingly good throughout his career, especially being a mostly 2nd line center. Remarkably consistent career. Maybe he really didn't like Taylor Hall lol.

Once again, a little more than I was projecting him to sign with the Leafs for. Still think that's a fine contract, especially for a team with tons of cap space.
