Mitch Marner is trending now because of this.

Because a player who had accomplished less on his ELC got paid less on his next contract? Blerg.
Someone made a good point that he seems closer to a Nylander comparable than a Marner comparable.

Probably. Certainly, his accomplishments are more in line with Willy than Mitch.

$7.750m X 8 years.

He's 28.  Seems about right?

Seems like the sort of thing we were talking about in the other thread. I'm sure there are contracts it compares well to but it also seems fairly likely he could have got at least a million more per year as a UFA.

Couturier still has 1 year left on his current contract so when the regular season starts on his first year of this one he'll be a couple of months away from turning 30. An 8-year deal at that point is always a bit of a risk but the AAV still seems pretty solid. One of the top defensive centres in the league and 4 straight seasons scoring at a 70-point pace.

It's not that long ago when guys like Duchene and Couture were getting $8mil for 7/8 years. Heck it was only 2 years ago when Philly gave Kevin Hayes $7.14mil for 7 years and Couturier is on a completely different level than him.

Lou finally signed the contracts that have been on his desk for a month:

Parayko becomes the 3rd Blues defenceman to sign a long-term deal at $6.5mil (Krug and Faulk signed at that rate for 7 years).

Would you do that for Rielly? I?m kind of a yes, but his profile is quite different.

From what I've heard, Parayko at 6.5 is a bargain (relative, to, say Nurse).  And I think that Reily at 6.5 would also be a bargain relative to what I think he'd get on the open market (7.5+?).

I?d typically say no to signing a guy into his late 30s at a significant cap hit (elite/all star caliber players excepted, sometimes). Rielly would be borderline for me. He?s not quite at that level, but not far off, and plays a style that should allow him to have a long career. On the flip side, he?s already had some injury issues that concern me in terms of giving him a long term deal. I think I?d lean towards no, but also wouldn?t think it was a terrible move.

For the record, as much as I like Parayko as a player, I wouldn?t have given him 8 years, either. I don?t think he?ll deliver value for the last few years of the contract.

The thing for me right now with the Blues is they aren?t all that good.  They got a fluke cup run having a phenomenal half a season and postseason but I don?t see them as much of a contender for the next 2-3 years so what are they saving money for with that extended term

For Montreal?s higher first and Montreal?s own 2024 second, unless both 1sts are top-10, then Montreal keeps the better one
Cool

I think he should keep it and turn it into a rental property
