2023-24 General Trades & Signings

What we're seeing are two teams that haven't had much playoff success lately catching fire and just going for it. We've also beaten them both while dealing with injuries and substandard performances this season. Edmonton is probably the next to bite on something.

Tidy bit of business by Montreal though!

Absolute lunacy. I get the cap hit stuff but this dudes a 3C and pending UFA.

edit: and they don't even get any retention either

I agree.

We need to kidnap Treliving et al until after the deadline.

Lindholm deal raised the bar.

The bidding on Tanev will be nuts.

On the flip side...does this add fuel to the "selloff assets" fire?

If I were GM, that would be a top priority to look at.
But MLSE board is unlikely to go along with it.

My hesitation is you should have a better idea as to how the scenario is likely to play out.
Part of that is, if you have your fire sale, how will you fix the roster?
Some of the answer lies in the UFA market. At a glance, that doesn't look really great this summer.

My priority would be to fix the top 4 D. I think they need two of them.
Rielly ______ (UFA?)
McCabe ______ (Trade?)
Benoit Liljegren

That priority assumes Woll is probably going to be their Cup winning goalie. Is he able?
Woll
Jones?
Hildeby?

Then they have to fill in the forwards

_______ Matthews Nylander
_______ Tavares  Marner
Knies  ________  Jarnkrok
_______ Kampf  _______
(maybe Knies is top 6 ..)
Robertson - does he fit?
Is Minten going to be able to help next season?
Holmberg probably can help.
etc

And it all has to fit under the cap

Presumably a fire sale could help fill a couple of the holes providing more young assets for trades to help make up for a thinner UFA market for what they need.

Because they have few young assets to trade, they will be more reliant on the UFA market to fix the roster.

My suspicion is that it gives them a better chance to be a real contender next season as they definitely do not have enough young assets to burn to make them a real contender this season. But I'd want a little more clarity on the UFA market and how likely it would be to help. Part of that is because they got left at the top 4 dman alter in the UFA market last year. And I'd want some better idea of what I think I could trade for before I committed - maybe in the summer when prices are hopefully more reasonable.

Loosely, that would be my thought process.

Dubas finally gets the guy he wanted to draft and it only took trading Nylander.

Grushnikov doesn't seem to be a top prospect.

A 2nd and maybe a third plus a prayer, so this seems to be affordable currency for a good UFA RHD?

Dallas gets Tanev with 75% retention for a late 2024 2nd round draft pick, a 2026 3rd round draft pick that only gets sent if the Stars advance to the Finals this year, their 10th best prospect (per the Athletic's rankings this month), and a 2026 4th rounder.

That's kind of a steal for them.

*juicy wet fart noises*

We can get Tanev in the offseason for a Giordano-y deal if he?s up for it.

Lame. So they'd rather go for a crappy deal instead?

What next?

Spoiler alert: we're boinked.  You can tell we're boinked because Tyson Barrie is mentioned as an option, all of which are lousy.  Of the names they list, I think I would bring back Boosh for next to nothing and hope for the best.

I've heard Adam Larsson also mentioned. I think Tanev or boinked is an overstatement.

Would have been nice.

I just think it was a long shot for BT to make a trade with Calgary for a reasonable ask.

Absolutely. They didn't allow Tre on the draft floor. Ownership is bitter.

No to Boosh. Been there done that. I'd take a look at Peeke or Boqvist before him.

Not sure about boinked but

At the least, I think they need a physical RH defensive dman who can PK. PK is their biggest weakness

David Savard - decent pker and physical - not the greatest but probably the closest, doubt MTL would move him at a reasonable talent price to the Leafs

Sean Walker - good on PK - not so physical - might be able to flip a goalie to Philly to cut talent price though Philly may have a goalie deal in the works and since they're within the playoff teams, not sure why they would trade him

Matt Dumba - luke warm if that - ok PK maybe - no way I'd give a 1st rounder for him
Ilya Lyubushkin - physical but not great on PK - low pick maybe if they can't get anything else

The rest, I'm not very excited about:
Alex Carrier - too small
Andrew Peeke - not a PKer
Adam Boqvist - not physical, doesn't pk
Tyson Barrie - pass like a bunch of the NHL
Larson - apparently not available
Hanifin wants to play in US

Hopefully, some other candidates become available.

Lagesson - jury is still out for me - need to see him more but I do not mind what I've seen so far - he's somewhat physical and decent on the PK in the limited stats I recall.
We know Timmins is capable offensively. If they keep Giordano off the PK and limit ice time, he's ok.
If they do not get any good options, I think they should look at a 7 man D to address their weakest problem. They can double shift some of the top 9 to play with the two 4th liners.

I'd do that before I'd burn a 1st round pick renting any of the candidates listed above.

Not saying he's the guy the Leafs should target because he's not a top 4 guy, but Peeke averages 1:27/gm Pking. He's on the 2nd pairing of PKing D men after Provorov and Gudbranson. Last year he lead the team in short handed minutes. He's only played 20 games this season. Leads the team in blocked shots per 60 and leads the D men in hits per 60. He has 40 hits in 20 games. He's 25, signed for 2 more years at 2.75M.
