2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

As amazing of an urban legend as it is, I never really believed the "he thought he was signing Kurt Sauer!" thing. It was just a bad contract which led to a lot of bad explanations from people as to why it was signed (like Ron Wilson talking him up like the greatest thing).

Didn't Jeff Finger have better stats than Kurt Sauer at the time of the signing? I think Kurt Sauer was better known at the time, that is all.

I think people forget that he was behind a couple of moves that are among the worst in franchise history - the Finger signing and the steen-stempniak trade.

I don't think too many people forget that. It's just that they're not really relevant to his current role in the organization.

He should have no role at all, but yeah I get what you?re saying.

I mean, he basically has no role, or, at best, a very marginal one. He's not involved in any decision making. He watches games and provides his insights. He's basically a glorified message board poster.

I get that he's a legend and all that, but is he really advising anything to anybody?  MLSE has the cash but this just seems unnecessary.

It's essentially a golden parachute rather than a real position. I doubt anyone is putting much weight into his input anymore, but you never know when someone might spot something others miss. Never hurts to have extra eyes on things, as long as you're weighing their input appropriately.
Jeff FINGER.

Like Marincin, he was better than people give him credit for.  Don't blame him for getting overpaid.

No one is blaming the player. The blame is 100% on fletcher because he thought he was signing someone else.

I still hate Fletcher for how Sundin was treated.

Well, now is as good a time as any to reveal the truth: "Carlton the Bear" is none other than Cliff "Dial Tone" Fletcher.

Technically not a prospect anymore, so this video is landing here in the main thread. Please extend him now.

Season Schedule

I am making a commitment to be more engaged with Leafs games this season.  I will watch them like in the olden days - no cell phone distractions checking messages during play.  The phone goes into "do not disturb" mode while the hockey is on.  Let's go!

Harvard roster had him at 6'1" 190 lbs in 2019-20
He went to 6'2" 200 lbs in 2021-22
Hockeydb had him at 6'2" 205 lbs
To drop to 6'0" 185 lbs as of 2023-24 seems weird

To be known as a physical player that you see in the clips
and as a guy who will drop the gloves

6'0" 185 lbs - smaller than any roster in college seems unlikely

I did not see him lots. I didn't mind what I did see.
Cushman's assessment seems plausible - maybe tops out as bottom pairing/depth dman.
One thing I felt from watching him that Cushman didn't mention (before I learned of his Harvard background), I think he's a pretty smart player - that has helped him defensively.

Presently, I doubt he cracks the top 7 so he'll probably have to clear waivers. That might not be automatic.

Regardless, I don't mind the signing. He seemed to earn it.
