2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

That's not a fact.

MacKinnon signed ELC and then a Bridge Contract for $6.3m and then AFTER the Avs won a Cup he signed for the Mega Contract at $12.6m.

Again.... contracts need reciprocity. You need a "carrot" where if there is performance, they will eventually get more. If you give them everything without getting that performance, you spoil the player because they are comfortable.
Bridge deals are 2,3 and maybe 4 years long. Macs deal was for 7 years. That's not a bridge deal.

Yup. If a player is eligible to become a UFA at the end of the contract (regardless of whether or not they actually hit the market), it's not a bridge deal. That contract was fair value for how he had performed on his ELC. The fact that he broke out after that and became one of the top players in the league doesn't change that.

7 years at 6.3 isn’t a bridge. Look at what his stats were compared to Marner’s at the time he signed that deal.

I’m not saying Marner didn’t get paid too soon, but his stats lined up with ‘future’ pay. You have to look at it in context. I’m sure they were thinking the cap would rise significantly. It was a gamble that doesn’t look fantastic in retrospect but it’s what happened.

So yes, these are facts.
6.3m for MacKinnon is not even in the same hemisphere for the comp recieved by Marner and Matthews. 6.3m is not a Mega Contract.

Yet Marner and Matthews are not even in the same hemisphere as MacKinnon (and Makar) in terms of reciprocity of contract.....these two on the Avs have delivered multiple playoff round victories and even a Cup.

Contracts are two way. Not one way.

Now you're comparing dollars? You are wrong that Macs 2nd deal was a bridge so just accept the loss and stop trying to move the goalposts.

But I'll play..... Mac's 3 year ELC before signing his 7 year deal...63/82G, 38/64, 52/72. 153pts/218Games, 0.7pts/G.
Marner...61/77G, 69/82G, 94/82G. 224pts/241G. So in 23 more games he had 71 more points. That's a huge difference and some said at the time, like the Draisaitl deal, that it was an over payment. Mac's deal was also signed in 2016, Marner's in 2019.

Read what I wrote again and what others wrote above. Context and timing matters and makes a difference.

Of course we are comparing dollars. That's been the entire discussion.

For sure Matthews and Marner are tops in cookies and apples. I'm enjoying it big Time!!. But ultimately the delivery for the team and the fans are wins (win in the playoffs).

I think Oilers fans, Avs fans, Lightening and Blackhawk fans got a good deal..... paid their money and time and emotions and got playoff wins.

Markets get what they demand in terms of standards. Toronto will take anything and pay anything. Because we love hockey so badly. We pay more than anyone and get less than most.

I look at the positives. Leafs have been in a slump for about a week, I fully expect them to pull out of it and win when it counts most - against the Habs on Saturday night.
Zee as much as all of you know my distaste for the Habs I wouldn't bank on that. Habs are playing great and we aren't. With JT going down I think the next few games are going to be even harder to win the way we are playing and struggling to score. They need to figure something out their play has been horrendous.

No one enjoys a PP that doesn’t move.

Which isn't really any different than our observations here from like 3 years ago. Marner is hella dangerous on the PP when he is working down the wall, but a non-factor if he is standing still looking for a seam pass. They keep looking for Matthews who is usually well covered while he stands still at the bottom of the circle.

I, and the coaching staff, are befuddled as to why these players keep devolving into table hockey mode on the PP every season.

Bridge or no bridge call it what you want but he signed for far less than what he could have signed for. I haven't seen or heard that from our stars. Read this article and you have a greater appreciation for Nathan.

Did you actually read the article?

“I think you want to get paid what you’re worth,” he said. “I’d probably do the same thing. If a team isn’t paying you what you think you’re worth, holding out is something (players) are entitled to … I think it’s going to continue that way.”
