Auston Matthews

We really don't know what happened and the drunken perspective of these lads, as they are still lads. My maxim has always been about casting the first stone.  Every single one of us has done things we regret.  Stupid things.

They were known to her and she was known to them.

We have no idea what the relationship between all these people are.

Sure we do. She is the security guard in his building and knows him by name.

I also know him by name because he's pretty famous, and just because she was a security guard at his condo doesn't mean Matthews or his friends would have had any idea who the woman was. Maybe she was new to the job. Maybe she works shifts opposite of when Matthews is often around. Maybe Matthews is someone who doesn't really pay any attention to people in that position. It's entirely possible these two had never interacted prior to this night.

All I'm saying is for someone who says we should wait for all the facts to come out and not jump to any conclusions suggesting that these actions were innocent and playful because everyone knew each other is a pretty big assumption to make.

I agree that it is somewhat presumptuous, but I am basing this on the sentence in the complaint that reads "She further added that she was able to identify the resident as Auston Matthews who resides in the building."

If you live in a building like that you tend to get at least a little familiar with security staff as you come and go. But yes, she could be new and maybe she only knows him because he is famous.

If you're a very wealthy celebrity 22 year old? Who the heck knows what's "typical" for someone like Matthews.

So it seems like the Leafs didn't know about this beforehand based on Babcock's comments. Oof, another lapse of judgement by Matthews. Did he actually think it would go away if he hid it from the team?

Babcock himself didn't know.  That doesn't mean that nobody in the org. knew.

That would be a stretch to believe management knew and didn't give Babcock a heads up. He faces the cameras everyday. This isn't some plug in the organization

Let's be realistic, if Shanahan and Dubas knew, then Babcock would too.  And if for whatever reason they knew and didn't pass the info along to Babcock, that begs the question as to why.

This could play as large of a role in Matthews losing out on the C (for now at least) than the alleged actions will. Very strange for the Leafs to have not been made aware of what was going on. Unless this is some weird situation where Matthews himself wasn't even full aware of the legal actions that were taking place (maybe he just told his agent to handle it and was left out of the loop completely after, I dunno).

Hard to believe that having a criminal complaint filed against you, no matter the severity, is something you'd be un- or semi-aware of.  Shanahan & Co. must be beside themselves.

Yeah, if true this looks like a colossal failure of judgment on Matthews' part.

Is it though? If you get a DUI how quickly are you telling your boss?

I appreciate that the Leafs would have wanted to know about it sooner but it's really not that strange at all for Matthews to want to keep this as quiet as possible.

He's basically still a kid, probably was worried how the team would react if he told them so he hoped it would be settled quietly without anyone finding out.  Not good judgment at all, I mean he'll learn from this in the most public way possible.

You have to think that the Leafs were going to find out about it eventually though, right? I get Matthews not being proud about all this and being embarrassed by it, but keeping it quiet just makes thing worse. And I'm not putting all the blame on him here exactly. His agent/lawyer should have been the ones to inform the Leafs about it if it wasn't him.

I'd also add that if this news was bound to come out eventually, it probably would have better served everyone if it came out in the middle of August as opposed to a week before the regular season starts.

What effect would this news have had pre-Marner signing?

Dreger: "Marner now thinks Nylander is his only comparable"

Well, that's the other thing I don't get. So it happens in May and we don't hear about it until literally the day before his scheduled court appearance. Why are we hearing about it now? Did someone at the courthouse recognize Matthews' name? People just randomly searching for famous names in public records?

Because doesn't the fact that we're only hearing about it now kind of indicate that maybe it being discovered wasn't inevitable? Think about all of the people who would have had to have known about this before now from Auston's friends to the Security Guard(and presumably everyone she told) to the Police...and nobody says anything apparently. So...I have no idea how inevitable it is.

It feels like the reason his agent/lawyer didn't tell him to tell the Leafs might be because they didn't think it would come up.

The way this came out was definitely pretty strange. This was literally the first mention of it:

That's it. Just some random Habs fan on twitter. Posted on Monday evening, and it wasn't until Tuesday afternoon that others on twitter took notice to it.

Also, has the NHL suspended anyone for alleged off-ice criminal conduct that wasn't specifically about domestic violence or drugs? Like, say, driving into a Tim Horton's or punching a Cab Driver?

Just more evidence that Habs fans are evil
