Makes for great radio/tv though. Some of our best threads here were discussions that spawned off ridiculous takes.

I?m guessing this thing is going to go down to the wire at this point.  It could go either way.  Kind of stressful.  I have a sinking feeling that Nylander is going to sit out for the season, for a variety of reasons.  I know if I were management right now I would not be happy at all at this point and I would settle for nothing less than Nylander signing at a very team friendly deal.  And I would be shocked if Nylander did that.  It would be quite the mea culpa that I don?t think he or his agent is capable of.

Dec 1st will be like trade deadline day but only 1 team is making news. Probably get a deal done and announced before 5pm on that day.

I think the key to staying optimistic is to remind yourself that the team and Nylander's reps probably aren't looking at this emotionally. There's no reason to think Dubas is "unhappy" with this and will negotiate as such or that if Nylander were to sign that he'd view it as some sort of admission of guilt or fault.

So long as everyone keeps things professional, there's no reason they can't sign a deal at the deadline that everyone's happy with.

If they can't ... and sitting here watching the rumored trade partner ... does anybody think Dubas might want to try to unload Zaitsev along with Nylander if it comes to that?

Throw in Hainsey and you have a deal

I don't think so. I think Nylander will only get traded as an absolute last resort and adding pieces to the deal only complicates matters.

I tried composing a response that works through a possible deal with Carolina but -- you are probably right.

Management won't be so emotional over it. It may well go down to the wire if both sides believe the other is going to ease their demands as the window closes, but that's just tactics. Any attempt to be punitive would be a risk to a deal getting done.

Babs quote: ?Obviously ecstatic,? said Leafs coach Mike Babcock, when asked how he views this opening stretch of the season. ?Any way you look at it we?ve got off to a good start. We think our team?s going to be better, we have significant pieces not here and they will be here. So we?ll be a deeper team.?

Ooooooooo! THEY will be here!!

No one else excited by the Babs quote? To me, it holds more weight than all the media speculation put together. I am a lot more optimistic about Nylander staying put after his quote.

I don't read too much into Babcock's "they will be here" line.  He's known as trying to always be positive and optimistic so I think it's just Babs trying to say he's confident Nylander will be back without actually giving away behind the scenes knowledge that a deal is imminent.  I'm sure Babcock isn't involved in the day to day negotiations, he just has a general sense from management if they think things are going well.
