To be fair, Dubas just supposedly said that he'd have an update on things by 5pm, not that he'd share it with the hoi polloi.

Well then, I hope the Columbas fan exchanged numbers with Dubas so he can tell us what Kyle finds out at 5pm.  ;D

It is a little interesting though that by waiting this long Nylander may have cost himself a heavy signing bonus deal, or a heavily front loaded deal. Like Bob says, for the Leafs to get the biggest cap benefit via the late signing the dollars have to be pretty even throughout the deal (don't ask me to explain this, I can't).

The cap benefit in years 2+ is calculated based off how much salary is left after year 1, so a front-loaded deal or a signing bonus to offset the two months missed will significantly decrease that 200-400k 'savings' on those future cap hits.

Two thoughts (I'm sure you wouldn't read 31 from me):

1.  Maybe this Lacey guy simply cut the quote short.  Here is the full quote:  "I'll have an update by 5pm on December 1st"

2.  The deal can be heavily frontloaded in yrs 2/3 instead of yr 1 and the cap savings shrink as Herman mentioned.  Still doesn't mean he's cost himself a heavily frontloaded deal though.  Same goes with signing bonuses.  Instead of say Tavares, who has heavy SB money on July 1st in yr 1-3, Nylander could still get heavy signing bonuses in yrs 2-4 or whatever.  So I'd say its a stretch to say he may have cost himself these things.

I'll stick by Marc Savard more so than that Columbus dude.  At least Savard would have real NHL connections so who knows.

Yeah, and while I don't buy the details we're getting, part of me hopes this is kind of a "where there's smoke, there's fire" situation, and Nylander will be in a Leaf uniform by next weekend.

I mean missing an entire season would benefit nobody.  The Leafs and Nylander have to realize this.  They have to be able to come to terms on minimum a 2 year deal (I say 2 cause they won't want to have to go through this entire mess again next summer)

Yup even better now that we have passed Nov 15.

If the Leafs give him $7M over 6 years we would get a Pasternak cap hit.

Some math:

If Nylander signs at $7M x 6 years today, total salary received [7x{1-(24/82)}]+(7x5) = $39.95M, cap hit 6.7M

If Nylander signed at 6.7M x 6 years in the offseason, total salary received 6.7M x 6 = 40.20, cap hit 6.7M

Basically, the same net results except having him out of the line for the first quarter of the season.

I know it?s not exactly how this works but I was pretty much resigned to him not playing.  For me, if he is in the lineup we just traded for a first line winger and paid nothing for him.  This lineup is ridiculous if they can stay healthy

If you want to mess around with what Nylander's salary structure and subsequent cap hit might look like on the day that he signs, reddit user u/Earlisaboss put a calculator spreadsheet together.

I'm looking at the formula for years 2+ again via CapFriendly:
Cap hit after the first year = (First year salary * season days remaining / total season days + contract value remaining) / contract years
Perhaps I was wrong about front-loading leading to less of a 'savings', as the remaining contract value seems to have a greater impact on the calculation. Front-loading does lead to a better cap savings but also to more of the contract payout lost to Nylander (and thus less likely).

Me: I've gotta stop believing randos on twitter who say that Nylander is signing.

Also me: He's signing.

What's not to believe?  Dubas just gives some random dude off the street a hot tip that news is coming at 5pm?  I mean why wouldn't he do that?

That would be awesome. I hope that not only is it true, but that going forward that Dubas tips all his transactions this way.

Lol, gives reporters nothing but if you happen to be some random dude some day in a Starbucks and Dubas is in the right mood he'll give you gold

Thanks Herman.  I am hopeful.  But I will believe it when I see it.  I get the sense that Nylander wants to take this to the wall.

And here I thought that Eklund was a thing of the distant past.
Dude Eklund does a video podcast with Mike from Buffalo...
