COVID Cap Crunch - 2020 Offseason

I admit I may not be tapped into online hockey discourse the way I once was but I never felt like Chayka had much of a reputation as some sort of genius wunderkind outside of his hiring at such a young age.

Which isn't to say I thought he did badly in Phoenix, just that I never noticed a big "Chayka's doing incredible work out there" movement.

Obviously Dubas hasn't necessarily done anything with the Leafs either.  It's not like our top players were drafted with depth picks to come out of nowhere but it is interesting how Chayka got a reputation for being so awesome while not actually doing anything.

Arizona has had four seasons with Chayka as the GM.  They finished with 70 points, 70 points, 86 points and 74 points (abbreviated season).  The only year his team "made" the playoffs was in a season where they had the 22nd best record in the league.  He accomplished nothing out of the way of any media scrutiny because noone cares about the team.

Did Chayka ever really have a reputation for being "awesome"? If anything I think he was sorta stuck between criticisms from all sides. The "old school" folks liked to criticize him for being an inexperienced stats guy and the "new school" folks often distanced themselves from him because he was using the types of analytics that they weren't particular fans of.

I'm betting the haven't aged well  That Weber contract was horrible. Might still be for Nashville if Weber retires lol. I didn't see PK's game falling off the cliff like it has.

A potentially significant injury didn't help much. Without that, Subban would probably still be one of the best blue liners in the league.

Playing for a completely inept Devils team wasn't exactly great for him, either. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see him bounce back if the Devils get their game together or if he moves to a new team.
I think he possibly could turn things around. He seems to be working out like crazy.

You know what, I see the appeal now.

Habs extend Petry.

https://www.nhl.com/canadiens/news/canadiens-sign-defenseman-jeff-petry-to-a-four-year-contract-extension/c-319182532

$6.25M for 4 seasons (extension starts in the 21/22 season).

Seems risky for the Habs to commit to this contract when he still has a full year left on his contract. I like Petry but he's 32, turns 33 this December, so will be 34 basically when the 21/22 season starts.

I'm not saying he's definitely going to decline this upcoming season, but the odds of him having a career year seem slim to none. If he was happy with this contract now I can't see that changing if it was offered to him closer to the end of the next season. I just don't really get the rush to get this one done.

As Leafs fans I think we can agree we hope his decline is already well underway and it's swift.

So Petry is getting 6.25 until he's 38? If Pietrangelo is getting 8 until he's 38 that would seem like a deal, no?

Detroit tank is gearing up. Only 3.2M left to pay out on Staal?s final season at a 5.7M cap hit.

For those of you asking "How is Ottawa going to get to the floor" in the Bobby Ryan talk, picking up 2nd's for taking on expiring bad money deals is probably a good bet. Lots of teams looking to dump salary.

Yzerman continues to trade with the Rangers even though he?s on a different team now at the Rangers are under new management.

Some big ticket trade bait out there that I currently have no interest in for the Leafs: Shayne Gostisbehere and Patrik Laine

I don't even know what a Laine trade would look like.

Give Dubas time and maybe he'll come close with Soo signings and trades.
Keefe/McLean
Muzzin
Clifford
Campbell
Brett Findlay (Marlies)
Tyler Gaudet (Marlies)
Hollowell (sort of)
Sandin (sort of)

Almost $13mil in dead cap space and will likely be a team with playoff aspirations.
