Free Agent Pursuit Thread(No You-Know-Who)

That being said, with the significant potential for that pick to end up being in the top 3, it's not a move I see the team making.

With Liljegren being the only player in next years draft who might hold a candle to Seth Jones I really don't think that would be something that would scare the Leafs off. I mean even if we finished dead last again next season (which would surprise me even without the addition of Seth Jones), the odds of us getting a top-2 pick aren't very high.

Whatever happened to "we must be patient so we can keep rebuilding and drafting young kids?"  Now we're throwing away 1sts and 2nds?  This is a very bi-polar board.

Yeah. First you say you want to use your draft picks on a top 2 defensive prospect, now you say you want to use your draft picks on a 21 year old top 2 defensive prospect. MAKE UP YOUR MIND!

Draft Schmaft.

I was referring to not waiting to sign Stamkos because we want to draft high and continue the rebuild.  But, then we're going to trade away a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd for one defenseman (who yes may become elite, still debatable... see Tyler Myers).  This is like doing the whole Kessel thing again but yeah we're not cuz it doesn't suit your argument.

I'm more inclined to wait it out and hope to draft someone or to give our kids a chance to come into their own.

If the Leafs did agree a trade (presumably with JVR plus and taking back one or two bad contracts) then could Jones still be offer sheeted by another team before agreeing a deal with the Leafs? If so I guess any trade would be made only after a window to negotiate a new contract beforehand is agreed.

This is only like Kessel if you entirely ignore every semblance of context.

If the Blue Jackets did decide to bite the bullet and trade Jones, it would probably come with the same caveat that the 3rd overall pick did: gotta take one of their terrible contracts as well.

I read that as Clarkson.  He would have to be immediately bought out for a $3.75 MIL cap hit for the next 2 years, a whopping $4.75 MIL the next 2 years and $0.5 MIL the final 4 years which is nothing.

Is Jones really a top 1st pairing dman though?  I thought of him as a  top 2nd pairing or low 1st pairing.  This almost feels like a bit of hype to me.  I admit that I haven't watched a lot of Jones but what I saw from him as a young dman, he didn't remind me of Ekblad, it was more like Gardiner with decent skating, non physical and some bad give aways.  Some here seem to be suggesting that Jones is worth 50% more than Rielly.

What would the trade be?  Cowen (more cap space), Bozak (good center), Corrado, Top Prospect for Jones and Clarkson?

Seth Jones received a qualifying offer yesterday (of course).

My older alternative RHD of top-2 potential, Tyson Barrie, also received an offer from the Avs.

Rasmus Ristolainen also received a qualifying offer from Buffalo, and appears to be in the middle of an extension negotiation, likely at Vatanen/Rielly numbers.

Is there an offer sheet opportunity on either of those?

Barrie isn't worth the draft pick cost plus the cap commitment he'll come with. He's a good defenceman, but not really the piece the Leafs need. Ristolainen is intriguing, but, I imagine the Sabres match anything remotely reasonable.

Thanks, busta.

I was going to wonder out loud if Buffalo might cap themselves out with a free agent splash, but I see they are in a great position to be flexible with a lot of cheap and short contracts where they don't matter, and cheapish contracts with good term on players with greater potential. I'm ready for ours to look like that next season.

An offer sheet on Ristolainen would be foolish.  It would just mean we'd be stuck with a huge cap hit, plus, we'd lose the necessary compensation draft picks.  Any reasonable offer sheet would be matched by Buffalo!

Calgary still wants Joe, from what I hear*, and Joe still wants to stay with Calgary. They just want it at a lower number.

A lower number than $1.275M?

Apparently they were afraid of going to arbitration with him. He had a very good, albeit probably not repeatable season. So he probably would have been given a figure there that the Flames would have had to walk away from anyway. They basically gave up exclusive rights to negotiate with him to take away his arbitration rights.

That makes sense. So if there's no qualifying offer, he's just a flat-out UFA, right?

Correct. The Devils did the same thing with Beau Bennett, after just trading a 3rd round draft pick to acquire him at the draft. I don't understand why they'd be worried about arbitration with him though, that's an odd one.
