There isn't a whole lot of cap space there to sign anyone without some trades before the end of the offseason.

They have something like 16M in cap space once you factor in the inevitable Robidas/Horton LTIR filings.  From that they need to sign Holland and Marincin on the main roster.  They also might want to think about the bonus structure that having a lineup potentially with Matthews, Marner and Nylander could potentially do to next years budget.  They are already stuck paying 2.1M in buyout money for Gleason (screw you Nonis) and Cowen.  Add in the 1.2M for Kessel and you start carrying around the risk of exceeding the cap with a team that hasn't even established itself yet.

Carrick and Matthews too.

I don't disagree, but remember there is about 16.5 million coming of the cap 17/18 when you subtract Laich, Greening, Michalek, Hunwick, Bernier and a couple of others.

You'd also imagine they will be looking at moving/ridding themselves of Lupul, Bozak and JVR via trades/Lou loopholes.

Between Nylander, Marner, Matthews, Zaitsev, and other rookies that could end up as regulars for the team this season, I came up with a total potential bonus outlay of ~$5.5M (assuming Matthews, like pretty much every other 1st overall pick, gets a contract with full Schedule B bonuses included) - which is right around the maximum 7.5% they'd be allowed to carry over into next season. It's unlikely they hit all those bonuses, but, they still need to account for some of that number as to not create a situation where carrying over bonuses from this season into next season puts them in a cap position that leads to them having to carry over bonuses into the 18/19 season, and so on.

Even with all the expiring contracts, having to potentially carry $5M-$6M in dead cap space next season is not a good thing - especially with the cap being determined by splitting the pie into 31 pieces instead of 30.

a glaring weakness in our organization (top pairing defenceman, preferably one that's right-handed). That would be Seth Jones.

I'd prefer a rights-trade vs. an offer sheet with regards to a Jones-type player. I think we can put together a very compelling package. Wouldn't CBJ want more known quantities? They're capped out too, and we have that room and patience to play it out.

Jones is the perfect age/player type/potential to line up with our success window, so I have no issue with pursuing him.

Had anybody heard this before?  It's news to me.

That's pretty significant for offer sheets of 6 or especially 7 years.

It's pretty alarming if, say, an offer sheet to Seth Jones of $7M x 7 years carries a cap hit of $9.8M.  A $2.8M cap penalty on the deal is awfully stiff.

I think that's just for determining compensation, not the actual cap hit.

Oooooohhh!  Fair enough, I didn't click the link.  Nonetheless, it certainly comes into play.  To get Seth Jones for the 1st/2nd/3rd compensation, he'd have to be offered no more than $7.5M over 5 years, $6.25M over 6 years, or $5.36M over 7 years.  And in each of those scenarios, Jones makes the same accumulated amount of money, so the shortest deal is most appealing to him.

Since the Leafs don't have their 3rd round pick next year, they can't table offer sheets with AAV's between $3,755,233 and $9,388,080.  I know Seth Jones is now signed, but there were a few here thinking we should try but it wouldn't have been possible unless we traded something to Detroit to get our 3rd round pick back or were willing to give up four 1st round picks.  Same goes for any other RFA's people may have been considering.  (And it applies next year- 3rd Round pick belongs to NJ thanks to signing Lou)

Nah, we covered that already. When they added the compensation for coaches rule they allowed teams with outstanding picks owed to offer sheet players as if they had those picks and, if successful, defer compensation a year.

Thanks for clarifying.  I was just following the graphics on that link above where the Leafs symbol is grayed out in certain compensation brackets.  Not everything you see on the internet is correct :P

Would anyone take a punt on Eric Staal if he could be had for a few million dollars for a couple of seasons (or even one season if there's nothig else out there for him)? A veteran presence and a bit of mentoring could be useful.

Days like today are fun, but they really make me dislike the league quite a bit.

PK Subban was traded, at least in part because of his skin color, anyone denying that is a liar or a fool.

You have absolute morons in Bergevin and Chiarelli running top NHL teams, you only get that if you have a sport that's completely incestuous and full of nepotism, there is zero chance these guys should be making these kinds of decisions.

I think it goes back to the origins of hockey being a sport of nobility and the British's role in having "the right element" in it. All the pushback about how hockey players are a different breed and how this and that isn't acceptable in hockey, it's pathetic. It seems to have such a small town vibe to it and not in a good way.

Ugh.

Skin colour? I'm gonna go with no, idiocy yes.
