How about Joe Colborne?

Gosh no!  He didn't show he wanted to be here when he was here.  He's not welcome back IMHO.

Its kind of hard though when you are pigeonholed into playing 6 minutes a night by Carlyle.

"I've got 3 shifts to make an impression. Should I pass to Orr or FML?"

When was Gardiner a healthy scratch for a significant period of time?

Well, that or buried in the Marlies for a time to start the 2012-13 season:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/gordon-idea-that-carlyle-doesnt-like-gardiner-is-comical/

The perception that Carlyle and Gardiner had a strained relationship began a year ago, when the defenceman did not make the team out of training camp and spent the beginning of the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season in the American Hockey League with the Marlies. Gardiner?s agent became frustrated and posted and a message on Twitter that stated #FreeJakeGardiner. Once Gardiner was recalled from the AHL in 2013, he was occasionally made a healthy scratch by Carlyle due to his inconsistent play in the defensive zone.

That's not being a healthy scratch though - he was playing in the AHL.

I highlighted the last sentence.

Get ready for Matt Martin to do really well in free agency. He's going to get paid more than people might think.

Ah man what kind of idiot GM would even waste their time talking to this guy? That's going to be a contract that's quickly regretted.

Hearing DET, TOR, MTL, BOS, LAK, CGY among the teams that have reached out to Matt Martin. #Isles

ummm...

There's always Sam Gagner.  :-\

Is it worth putting in an offer on Justin Schultz? Or is he basically just a slightly better version of Brennan?

Sometimes I think that certain "insiders" add large market destinations to trade rumors just to get more retweets.

I'd be beyond horrified if Martin was added. Yuck.

There's an element of that, sure, and it also wouldn't surprise me if the Leafs did chat with Martin. I expect the Leafs to have had conversations with just about every significant UFA - to the point that reporting that they've met with/reached out to one is virtually meaningless.

Ah, the good old days of Gardiner tried to skate the puck forward and Carlyle didn't like that.

I wonder how much some UFA conversations might even be primarily information gathering about what other teams are doing.

Maybe. I also imagine some of it is just information gathering, in general. Getting an idea of what players are looking for, finding out what the comparables are likely to be, etc. Due diligence more than anything else.

There isn't a whole lot of cap space there to sign anyone without some trades before the end of the offseason.

They have something like 16M in cap space once you factor in the inevitable Robidas/Horton LTIR filings.  From that they need to sign Holland and Marincin on the main roster.  They also might want to think about the bonus structure that having a lineup potentially with Matthews, Marner and Nylander could potentially do to next years budget.  They are already stuck paying 2.1M in buyout money for Gleason (screw you Nonis) and Cowen.  Add in the 1.2M for Kessel and you start carrying around the risk of exceeding the cap with a team that hasn't even established itself yet.
