Lou Lamoriello named Leafs General Manager

I don't get why it's contradictory.

I believe he's stating that offense may hide a bad team for a while and get you some wins but a good defense can carry a team for the entire season. Just me though.

Well, it's contradictory because you win championships by virtue of winning games. So on it's most elemental level it's, if not contradictory, gibberish.

On an actual intellectual level, it still largely is. Teams that win championships tend to be good at both things but there are just as many teams who've won a cup with a so-so defense and great offense as the reverse. People like to forget this now but some of those Devils teams were pretty good at putting the puck in the net.

I'm not saying I necessarily agree with him, just trying to make sense of what he said. It doesn't matter much anyhow.

I just read that before coming here, phenomenal.

There is going to be pain here the next few years, but I sincerely doubt we will see them out worked the way we have in the past.

I think that's all the fans will really need during this rebuild, a hard-working, honest group of players who leave it all out there each night, the results will come as new blood trickles from the prospect pool.

That's what really turned my stomach last season, the lack of effort and professionalism, if you lose, you lose, but laying down the way this group did last year was inexcusable.

I'll still thank them for Marner.

I liked this part:

Everyone understands that a successful team in hockey is full of guys who understand their role, but convincing guys to fill a role they think is below them isn?t easy...
A player?s perception, and his salary, is generally determined by a limited number of stats...

and

...the guys who didn?t buy into his system were usually quickly dealt with. But if he knew you cared and would do what it took to win, he would do everything in his power to get the very best out of you.

Exactly someone this Leafs team needs.  Lamoriello's know-how in changing the culture plus his mentorship role in the front office should be a boon for the organization in general.

Well-written article as per Daneyko on Lou.  He tells it like it is.

I'm with you!

All this 'culture change', and 'hard work' stuff is starting to worry me a bit.  It's too soon!  Lie back down, damn it!!  8)

You gotta hire the architects and all that before you tear down your old house to build a new one. That's all that's going on now. The change has started at the top, but, really, there hasn't enough change to the significant parts of the roster to have much of an impact on their overall success. They're still a few seasons from getting up.

I have a sinking feeling your wrong. At least the part about them being a down and out, bad team for a few seasons still. I think you may be underestimating the impact of a well organized structured team. Once this squad plays with some discipline, I'm guessing we'll see a noticeable improvement, right off the hop. I think they may even challenge for a playoff spot this year.

You're dreaming in technicolor. The Leafs have made a substantial downgrade in terms of talent. Their top scoring forward and their top scoring defenceman from last season are gone. They've brought in some quality depth guys, but they're not going to make up for that significant dip in talent. You're really overestimating the impact of structure. Without talent, all that structure is going to is make them a little less of a pushover. They won't get blown out of many games, but they're not going to be a successful team, and they won't be anywhere near the playoffs unless Bernier and Reimer have seasons like Price did.

Are you saying they're going to finish at or near the bottom of the league this season? Because I'd place a friendly bet against that happening?

No Kessel means teams will be focusing on shutting down Kardi, Lupul, and JvR.

This is going to be a tough season.
