Men's Olympic hockey

canada was like a boa constrictor ..they just slowly squeezed the life out of their opponents in the last two games. ..i felt like what they did to sweden was just a continuation of what they did to the US...

Carey Price's stats at the Olympics: 5-0-0, 0.60 GAA, .971 save percentage, 2 shutouts...& a gold medal

Now he just needs to take that pride and confidence and throw them in the garbage for 3+ years, please and thank you.

...Toews and Crosby were two of Canada's best players through the first five games but did not have a goal to show for it. Canadian coach Mike Babcock brushed off concerns about a lack of offence from his forwards, figuring they would come but hoping the stars wouldn't "run out of time."

"They're leaders for a reason," Canadian forward Jeff Carter said of Toews and Crosby. "They brought it every night."

That was dang near the best hockey game I've ever seen a team play.

My concern was entirely with their lack of finish in the tournament, but start to finish this was some of the best puck control and defensive hockey we will ever watch. Canada controlled every single game they played.  They were bigger.  They were for the most part faster and played nearly error free hockey the entire tournament.

I mean, I don't think a Gold justifies every decision but I do think that one of the things that became clear as the tournament wore on is that the guys who I really questioned being there like Benn, Vlasic and even St. Louis to some degree really fit into what it was Babcock wanted to do in terms of being big, fast, constantly pressing and really responsible defensively.

So, you know, every now and then it is nice to get a reminder that these guys know what they're doing.

You're going to love the crisp passes and smart defensive plays coming up soon with the Leafs.

I feel like these two weeks just have to have a snooze alarm somehow.

Just total domination. Even in the early rounds, on every part of the game but the scoreboard. Even in this game, the Swedes has some play for the first 5 minutes until Canada settled down, and then never let them have the puck back.

The best TC ever assembled, at an average age that could have the same team playing equally well in 4 years time (if applicable). Spare parts and cuts that could easily have contested for the silver medal. Embarrassment of hockey riches. Be proud, hockey fans, it doesn't get any better than this.

Dare I say it, but outside of the desired end result with the Canadians, did anyone else find the tournament rather boring?  I used to like the Olympic-size rink, but it killed a lot of flow.  The games in 2010 on the NHL surface provided way more entertaining hockey.

At 25, Toews has 2 Cups, 2 Oly gold, 2 WJr gold, 2 WC medals (gold/silver). And his name is close to "Twos" if you write it while drunk.

I've never been a huge Toews fan, but that is one hell of an impressive resume to retire with, let alone have at the age of 25.

Agreed.  And Kunitz scored a goal in the 3rd period so I guess that justified his role too?  I will say I wanted Luongo as the starter and Price couldn't have played any better than he did.

the large ice surface definitely didn't seem to benefit the typical "canadian" game ...which i find is much more bang and crash...that combined with the crappy ice quality seemed to benefit tactical superiority which was far more cerebral than emotional.

I know what you mean. With Canada there just wasn't nearly as much drama as in 2010, particularly in the gold medal game. The 1st period of USA-Canada was very exciting hockey, but the US just couldn't keep up and Canada took over the 2nd and 3rd periods. And today it was just domination from start to finish. We got to see one team play two of the most complete hockey games you might see so from a technical aspect it was great but not exactly exciting.

Aside from Canada there was some great hockey though. Slovakia almost coming back and beating the Czech Republic in the qualification round and the US-RUS game that went to a shootout were two highlights for me.

Absolutely. The only entertaining games were against the U.S. and Sweden, not just because of what was at stake, but because they didn't collapse into that 5 man box with the shorter blue line distance and block shots all game . The Norway, Austria, Latvia and even Finland game was a snorefest, cause only one team was actually trying to win.

I agree to an extent. The five guys hanging back strategy that the smaller countries used really made for some terrible games. I think the last two games were games with good pace but even a game like the Norway game where Canada had the puck for essentially the whole game but had to try and score with a crowd of 6 players in front of the net led to some pretty terrible stuff.
