No. I think you could get a late 1st for JVR in this draft but you certainly arent' getting the equivalent of two 1st round picks for him.

It never hurts to ask.

No, Phaneuf would never fetch #5 and dumping Semin gets Carolina nothing ...unless they can turn around and move out Phaneuf for a player they can both afford and need.
Carolina should trade #5 + Semin for Kessel. That way they rid themselves of an anchor contract and get a very good (scoring)winger to play with one of their two decent centres.
While it may be argued that this does not give Carolina enough, I would say it does: They have a goalie and a decent core that they either must build around now or disband and start a serious rebuild. If they choose the latter, they are still stuck with Semin and his contract and what happens to the ticket sales, and any job security for the coach and GM.
Contrary to what has heretofore been accepted as orthodoxy, IMO it is only places like Toronto (and Edmonton) that can sustain a full out rebuild (although the Oilers have been bad for longer than anyone (inside or outside of Edmonton) thought possible; not hockey frontier outposts like Carolina. It also follows that Toronto is one of the few teams willing to gobble up (going all Danny Gallivan on you here) dead contracts and at this early stage of the picks and prospects phase can do so on contracts with up to 3 years term left with little downside.
This could be expanded to include other players (Skinner - high contract, decent player but small and one concussion away, as they say - we would want to know the contract is insured) and someone coming back from the Leafs if need be.

I think you have fallen in love with parenthesis.

If you mean parentheses, why yes I have.
I prefer them to using a dash - you know when you wish to or need to digress (but I digress) - because it makes it clear that the comment is a digression and most people who use dashes forget that the phrase set off by dashes, is a digression and not part of the main thought of the sentence.
That said, I will try to control myself - I guess it's just when this place lost all my posts so I had to restart as an AHLer after several years and God knows how many lost posts - actually the people who run this site do know and won't credit me with them - but I digress (note the lack of parentheses - I am learning) - and I doubt any of them is God - note the correct use of "is" with the singular subject rather than the more popular but incorrect "are" - in the future, if not now.
Pedantic am I, but as Jessica Rabbit said, "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way"

return (err == 0 ? 1 : (err == E_AGAIN ? 2 : -1));
I guess it depends on the language.

Maybe...but originally his statement would have looked more like this:
return (err == 0 ? 1 : (err == E_AGAIN ? 2 : -1);

Carolina's not a team that can just eat dead money though. They're a team that does have something of a pressing need to compete now and a real need on the back end.
Last year Semin gave them basically nothing for 7 million dollars. Phaneuf is a good NHL defenseman. The D market isn't particularly good this year. So rather than simply using their existing cap space to make a big offer to Mike Green or whoever, by making this trade they'd add a defenseman better than any they could get as a free agent(and arguably better than any defenseman said to be available via trade), still have money to sign other defensemen and avoid dead cap space.
Is the #5 pick a big price for that? Yes. But assuming Hanifin's gone at #5 I really don't think Carolina can use that pick to get better quickly.
