Other draft day targets

I think that's a good point, but JVR has a low cap hit going for him.  Those boys will likely be getting around $2m more per season than JVR.

Maybe but those guys are also likely to sign for 4 or 5 years at least You get JVR at a lower price but only for 2 seasons. Over the course of 4 or 5 years I'd bet the price difference between them is pretty minimal.

I don't think that drives down the price so much as tells us who the likely trading partners would be. Teams in win-now mode who are on a budget or near the cap: Anaheim, LAK, Blues, maybe Preds?

Maybe, but I feel like that if any of those teams really preferred one of the free agents they could free up the 2-3 million that would represent the difference.

The only thing I dislike about mock drafts (and I suppose the actual draft coverage too) is that they make every player out to be amazing.  I feel like I don't really get an accurate view of them.

Also people who think it's acceptable to make trades in a mock draft.

I think it was on TSN's draft-eligible player review show on Monday that Button described at least 4 or 5 of the forwards as "...he has an elite, elite NHL release....best in this year's draft!" I guess math/logic wasn't Craig's strong suit.

I'm not usually a fan of capital punishment...

:)

I thought Puljujarvi was the better player at the WJHC- he was the engine that drove that line.  I think the comparisons they have are apt... Laine reminds me of Ovechkin.  Puljujarivi reminds me of Jamie Benn.  I'd rather have Jamie Benn as I think he makes his linemates better whereas Ovechkin/Laine need a setup man to thrive.

That said, I still think Laine goes 2nd thanks to recency bias.  (WHC & Finnish League Playoffs)

Ryan Rishaug reporting that Nail Yakupov could go for a late 2nd or 3rd round pick.

My suggestion that they might take Hunwick for him doesn't look so crazy now. Although they might be comfortable with their left-handed defencemen.

Edmonton can have pick 31 if they like. Nail just needs a change of scenery and is a better talent than anyone who'll be available at 31.

Babs will straighten him out.

I wouldn't give up anything more than a 3rd rounder for him. Maybe Washington's 2nd, but that's the highest. At this point, he's a project, and I'm not convinced he's a better talent than whoever might be available at 31. He needs more than a change of scenery. He needs to have large portions of his game completely overhauled.

If the Leafs traded for Yakupov they'd then have to figure out some way to convince President Trump to let them into the country for road games. One, maybe, but two?

Yeah, if they'd go for it, I'd give that up.

I have to say, I'm more bummed out than I thought I'd be by the trade of the #30 pick. I know it makes no tangible difference but I liked the idea of watching the draft, watching them take Matthews, and then still having a reason to watch the rest.

Would be funny if the Leafs pick Matthews, the entire table gets up and leaves. "see you guys tomorrow!"

I had the same feelings.  Then again, I have better things to do with the rest of my Friday night and a quick glance at who's left on the table for the #31 at the end of it is all I really want, then we can guess who they take first thing Saturday morning.

There's always the fun of hearing Gary Bettman say "we have a trade to announce" and then have him list off a bunch of draft picks.
