Other draft day targets

Just for some quick clarification, Graves and Foote didn't get picked 31st overall, they got picked with the first pick of the second round which was at the time the 22nd overall pick.

Hockeydb does a "best player by position" for every draft pick:

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/draft_bests.php?page=1

Where you can see that they have the best #30 picks as Sandis Ozolinsh and our ol' pal Randy Carlyle and the best #31 picks as two ex-Leafs in Felix Potvin and Tiger Williams.

But if you look through those lists so much of it is random. Picks #35 and #44 have yielded better returns than #32 and #29. There's really no rhyme or reason to it. Good players can be taken in the second round but, no, 2nd round picks aren't worth a ton. It's why we keep getting them for Daniel Winnik.

Thanks, Nik. I couldn't find a sortable list by pick, so I did settle on the 1st pick of the second round, and completely forgot about the fact there use to be fewer teams.

These picks are like playing pin the tail on the donkey.

The value them is really just that we have 11 of them after Matthews. The odds of hitting something are better if you have more picks.

And hopefully Hunter has a better average pinning that tail than other GMs.

I found this site showing a recent history of 30th overall picks, not a very inspiring list as far as well known names go. I'm sure there are a bunch of guys in here whose names I don't recognize or remember that played a bunch of games, but I was expecting better results for these picks historically. http://www.mynhldraft.com/nhl-draft-picks/30th-overall/300509/

I searched for a similar list for the 31st pick and didn't find one but I did look though a list of all picks for 31st overalls, which I don't intend to copy and paste out of, but here is that link: http://www.nhl.com/ice/draftsearch.htm?year=&team=&position=&round=2

Adam Foote and Adam Graves at 31st stood out and Patrice Brisebois at 30th.

It will be very interesting to see how the Leafs make out with these two picks. My opinion of their value as a trade asset is much lower now that it was prior to this minimal research. It also makes me lean towards thinking drafting goalies with these two picks is the best idea. If the hit rate is really low, stock up on a weak position, and I would expect the hit rate to be better for goalies.

Are you saying Pittsburgh robbed us in the Kessel trade here? 8)

I think the Leafs were far keener on trading him away than Pittsburgh was of trading for him.

That pick could have been much better had Pittsburgh lost in the first round like I told them to.

I've always disliked that trade because of the salary retention though. Now I do dislike it a little more though.

Console yourself that if the Leafs hadn't traded Kessel, they're probably getting a better record this past season and consequently not getting Auston Matthews.

And wouldn't have the cap space to sign Stamkos! ;)

That does make me feel better. But that 1.2 million is like a sliver in your hand. You don't really need to take it out, it stings once in a while, but doesn't really stop you from doing much. It will come out eventually on it's own, but I still want it out now!

I could see JVR, a second and prospect going to the oilers for that 4th pick.

I'm not too sure about that.  Oilers need defense and they have quite a few forwards.  I could see them making a deal with WPG for Myers or Trouba.

Especially if they sign Lucic as is widely rumoured.

RNH for Trouba?

I think I'm an avid hockey fan, like above average in terms of following things, but I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would have an interest in a mock draft.

In watching one? I agree, I can't think of anything more tedious, but, I do enjoy reading articles that are mock drafts and such, showing what some industry experts and scouts think in terms of how teams will draft. It helps give perspective on how certain prospects are valued and such.

I think it depends on the format it takes. For years Bill Simmons and Chad Ford did a NBA mock draft and it was less about the draft order and more a way for them to discuss the prospects. If you don't follow a lot of college basketball, or in this case junior hockey, it would be pretty cool to hear something comparable from guys who know their stuff.

The only thing I dislike about mock drafts (and I suppose the actual draft coverage too) is that they make every player out to be amazing.  I feel like I don't really get an accurate view of them.
