Parise to Minnesota

I suppose Philly or the Rags could have ponied up some crazy money, because god knows they don't mind doing that. But my gut says your right in that it wouldn't have been much more beyond the 98M that Minny offered.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Lamoriello said he reached out to Ryan Suter camp as well but said Suter didn't have interest in going East

My guess is, because of that, neither team was in the bidding long enough for it to get to that point.

Good for Minny fans but I'm sorry, I just have a hard time sorting out how these guys are worth this kind of bread.

why did they want minnesota?  I would have understood it it was like Detroit or another contending team.  What does minnesota have to offer?

Guaranteed money until age 40?

Well thats not the reason as both players had multiple multi year offers. Parise is from MIN & Suter is from WIS so being close to home must've been a factor.

Parise said going home and playing with someone he grew up with in Suter is why he chose Minny.  They left more money on the table elsewhere, so the Wild said.

And why is it Nash won't be coming home to Toronto?  ;)

Lebrun reporting the contracts break down as follows:

Year 1: $2 million base salary + $10 million signing bonus = $12 million
Year 2: $2 million base salary + $10 million signing bonus = $12 million
Year 3: $6 million base + $5 million signing bonus = $11 million
Years 4-8: $9 million base
Year 9: $8 million base
Year 10: $6 million base
Year 11: $2 million base
Years 12-13: $1 million base

The NHL has vowed to close that loophole, and warned teams that the transition rules would be harsh, but 14 teams have at least one of them.

It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Loophole on what? Decreasing value contracts to lower the cap hit?

They'll be living large during any potential lockout anyway.

Seriously. I guess the reports about Parise looking for a 12M signing bonus for this season weren't too far off the mark.

Yes... Sorry, his prior tweet;

What's interesting about the Parise and Suter contracts is that they both drop off sharply in the final years to bring the cap number down

I think adding an allstar to the top of your lineup, with no talent cost, and pushing every other guy down a slot really helps improve your team.  I think it will take half a season to make these guys gell with their teammates but it seems like a good move for Minnesota to me.  I don't know what Minnesota's prospect pipeline looks like (other than the fact that they took Dumba this year) but they should be competitive if they have some talented lost-cost rookies coming through their system to fill in the mid-range holes underneith their top-end guys.

I don't know, 200 mil. over 13 years? Like I said, as a fan, I'm giddy. As an owner, I'm more than slightly worried about the return on that investment - especially considering neither of these guys are among the dozen or so of the very best players in the league.

These deals only go to 40 though so I don't think it's fair to assume any of them won't be played. This is just an issue of front-loading.
