Parise to Minnesota

And that THN poll (although I admit I have multiple issues with it) has him as the 5th best defenceman in the league (with Lidstrom retired). I think that's a fair place to slot him.

Very quickly, I might have Karlsson, Letang, Keith, Doughty, Weber, Chara, and Maybe Yandle ahead of Suter... I might be forgetting another guy or two. No question he's in my top 10 but I don't think he'd make my top five.

Yandle took a step back this season, at least offensively speaking. And Keith hasn't been himself since the Blackhawks won the Cup. The only guys I'd definitely have over Suter would be Weber, Chara, and Karlsson. Suter would be in the next tier of defencemen with Letang, Doughty and Pietrangelo. And really the difference between those guys isn't really much to talk about.

I wouldn't consider Parise a top 10 forward at all... Winger? Likely.

His last three healthy seasons he's averaged 38 goals and 82 points. For some perspective, Alex Ovechkin is at 40 and 86.

Have you seen what Kovalchuk has done post lock-out? If I had to choose one winger in the entire league, it's him... A fair bit ahead of Parise. I'd probably take Iginla too if he promised that this wasn't the year he proved to the world he was, in fact, human.

Iginla over that three year span: 36 goals, 74 points
Kovalchuk over the three years: 36 goals, 76 points

Kovalchuck isn't 30 yet and he already sits 15th all-time among LW in goals with 406. Zach on the other hand, will be what, 28 this month and only has 194 goals... Less than half? Honestly, Lou has the better guy.

Some other notables:

Corey Perry: 38 g, 78 p
Henrik Zetterbeg: 23 g, 73 p
Phil Kessel: 33g, 67p
Rick Nash 32 g, 64 p
Patrick Kane 27 g, 76 p
Patrick Sharp: 31 g, 69 p
Daniel Sedin: 33 g, 85 p

Honestly, the only guy I can find with numbers better than Parise is Ovechkin and I think, gun to my head, I'd take Parise.

My goodness! It's almost as if there's a significant gap between the two of them in games played.

I haven't checked your numbers but I'm not sure why you're choosing to operate in a 3 year box.

Sure... Let me know where Parise is when he plays as many as Kovalchuk has now.

Long enough so that we're working with a multi-year spread, not so long as to include performance that isn't really relevant to today.

I believe Parise will need to score more than 200 goals in roughly 270 games to match what Kovalchuk has done... Yeah, I don't see it.

By who's standards?

...as a goal-scorer.

Factor in Parise's over-all game/leadership/physical play? Yeah, I'm perfectly comfortable making that argument. And he's still scored more goals than Kovalchuk the last couple of years.

Well, I don't know if Parise has any edge over Kovalchuck in any of the "over-all  game/leadership/physical play" categories but you're entitled to your opinion, I suppose. I'm equally comfortable.

Really? You don't know if Parise is a better defensive, more physical player than Ilya Kovalchuk?

Really. Kovalchuk can go around you or through you... Parise? Not so much.

Also, in those three years:

Parise: 836 PP minutes, 214 PK minutes
Kovalchuk: 1126 PP minutes, 106 PK minutes
