Useless Thread

It's absolutely true that the Toronto Star has a bit of a vendetta against Ford.  They write a lot of attacking articles, they intentionally use "bad" photos of the Mayor, and they pretty much disagree on every one of his decisions.  It started before he "banned" them from interviews but the justification for refusing to be interviewed by one of the two major Toronto papers was questionable by the Mayor in the first place.

I think what you have on the other side though is a Mayor who has been equally vindictive with his "enemies".  And I use enemies in quotations because it seems like anyone who doesn't agree to everything that he says, is deemed to be an enemy.  Guys who voted with him the majority of the time were ridiculed and threatened for not voting for Subways.  The Toronto Medical officer was threatened and had his professional abilities called into question for an 'anti-car' statement.
And thestar was banned for writing anti-Ford pieces.

I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility that Ford recognized who was outside, knew he was a part of the Toronto Star and went on the agressive knowing that it was going to turn into a he-said-she-said argument.  Those kinds of arguments tend to not sway either side.  The people who like Ford/don't like the stance of the star are going to side with the Mayor, and those that don't like Ford are going to side with the paper.

I think there are some legitimate concerns that come out of these repeated encounters however.  When Mary Walsh did that stupid Xena Warrior Princess thing earlier in the year, Ford ran inside and called the police a million times.  But when a person is spying over his fence after 7PM he suddenly runs out to confront the person (unarmed and without calling the police?)  That seems highly suspicious to me when someone acts significantly different under somewhat similar circumstances.

I don't like Rob Ford mostly for how he goes about his business, but I also don't really care for his policies so I freely admit my biases against him.  But I really don't care for the Toronto Star either.  I find them to be very much a shill piece paper that barely manages to keep its head above the Toronto level of quality.

Both sides are very guilty of engaging is a childish peeing contest.  We should expect WAY more impartial journalistic integrity from the Star, but I find it downright scary that this kind of character is in charge of the kind of budget/responsibilities of the city of Toronto and beyond that, how it reflects on Ontario and Canada as a whole (you don't have to look too far back to find a good number of international people who think Toronto is the capital of Canada).

Ford himself has said that he recognized Dale.

I had seen that too.  I'm taking it the step further and saying that by knowing who it was, he acted inappropriately.  I feel like he would have acted differently if he knew who the individual was, but that the individual wasn't a member of the Toronto Star.

A further note to this...

If the executive committee votes then to sell the land to Ford, the public will have to be consulted. The issue will then also go to a meeting of the TRCA at large for a final vote.

Staff members said Friday that they can't ever recall the agency selling parkland to a private homeowner based on security concerns.

So the public will be consulted should the deal go ahead, fairly significant interest there.

To be fair, he said he didn't know who it was until he approached, then when he got close he recognized him.

I think this whole Ford issue could easily be resolved with lingerie football.

If it has to go to overtime, then so be it.

You really can't put a time limit on the truth.

Sometimes when I'm bored I like to read the comments section of the Globe & Mail to be thoroughly entertained.  Reading the comments now about their decision to go to pay subscriptions online.  Here's a summary:

-Like I'd pay for your left-wing rag with your left-wing writers.

Hey!  How the hell is everyone?

Just had a major family reunion which went well.

It's the summer. Going to get my Guts pushed up into my mouth at CDA's Wonderland on the Sunday!
Wish me luck.

Good to hear from ya Ronco. Remember if you throw up at the top of the loop beware the bottom of the loop.

Google.com today.  Their Google Doodle is outstanding.  They are celebrating the birthdate of Robert Moog, the inventor of the Moog synthesizer.  You can even record with it...

Hey Ronco, nice to hear from you.  Have fun at Wonderland, no roller coasters for me.  Don't care for heights!

We're just busy as usual with everything that comes with 3 kids and work.  But life is fairly good.

Seems every 5th tweet from 680 news for like the last two months is about a pedestrian being struck in the 416. Just what the hell is going on down there?

It's a sport.

Actually, in all honesty, several women in the Cambridge area of the 401 have purposely walked out in front of big trucks when standing at the side of the 401.  Their suicide acts will last in the hearts and minds of the truckers who hit them forever.  I've went through suicidal periods in the past year, but each time I've come close to the act I can't stop thinking how the act will affect others, especially my kids...

Jesus. I hadn't even considered that. I was just thinking bad drivers.  :-\ Anyway, I'm glad you seem to be in a better head space these days, Rick and yeah, your kids need you.

I'm curious though why so many incidents of late.
