2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Yeah, I'm not really surprised that Muzzin wasn't moved.  It obviously would be an unpopular move in the lockerroom (and your GM has to be able to make those moves if they make the team better) but Muzzin is in the wrong type of situation for his injuries.  He's hurt a lot but he's not always hurt.  If he was purely an LTIR dump, lots of teams would be able to take that as I'm sure his contract is insured.  But Muzzin isn't always on LTIR.  He's an aging player who is slow at the best of times.  That's a contract that needs incentives for someone to take it.  It's also a contract that is on the books for another season so that's a lot of money to put toward a player who is not going to be reliably effective.  Other GMs aren't going to be doing us favours.

So you know how management are trying to move him on "due to injury and ineffective pay"? Do you think maybe then other management might think the same thing and not want to take him...?

I'm not saying you'd get a lot for him but there were rumblings that they didn't even entertain the idea because they liked Muzzin so much.

I don't know why*, but Mitch Marner always says things extremely dramatically even when he's trying to be evasive. Man just eulogized Muzzin's career.

* I do know why: Skittles.

Nevertheless, Muzzin on LTIR (yeah yeah, he's on IR at the moment), solves a lot of cap problems for the Leafs. If he is healthy for the playoffs and can come back in like last season as a black ace, cool. If he can't and is done, then that's 5.6+M we can work with (someone else will also have to be traded to free up contract space).

Muzzin has a Full No Trade Clause so that would be a reason why he hasn't been moved. On July 1, 2023 it converts to a 10-Team No Trade List.

Not to sound like a dick... But I'm kind of thinking "Frig this team."

Team isn't going anywhere until something changes with the roster. Didn't find anything wrong with Keefe's comments and now he's back tracked his comments. Definitely know who's running the show.

Muzzin nixing a trade is a lot different than the Leafs not entertaining a trade involving Muzzin.

He ?back tracked? because the glorious Canadian sport media machine twisted and turned it into something it wasn?t.

The problem isn?t with the team, it?s with the narratives that the media and social media fabricates around this team.

The Athletic had a free article where they ranked the retro jerseys.  Guess who came in dead last?  I do agree with their #1 pick though.

Kampf back with Engvall is the way to go. Don?t care who is on the RW.

Let?s go nuts

Robertson-Matthews-Nylander
Bunting-Tavares-Marner
ZAR-Kerfoot-Jarnkrok
Engvall-Kampf-Simmonds/Malgin/NAK

4th line certainly hasn't been as good as I envisioned, although I do wonder if they can keep up taking virtually every defensive zone draw with Simmonds on it. Having someone like Engvall (or Malgin) on it who can help with zone exits/transitions could be beneficial though.

What I don?t understand is how does Vegas and Seattle have a ?retro? jersey?

Slightly easier goings for the next match up. but maybe a Toninato revenge game (2012 5th rd pick of the Leafs).

It's the "if we could do it over" jersey,

John Tavares? quick start to the season might be explained, at least in part, by a big change he made in the offseason.

After 15 years of working with renowned skating coach Dawn Braid ? for the entirety of his NHL career in other words ? Tavares turned to Paul Matheson, who joined the Leafs as a skating development consultant in the offseason.

Ahead of his 14th NHL season, the Leafs captain was intent on making gains in the speed department.

With Matheson?s help, Tavares worked to be lighter on his skates. Doing so, he explained recently, meant altering the way he pushed off the ice. He described some of the work as almost like running on skates and during his post-practice work on Sunday, it looked just like that.

The skating helps him keep up with Nylander and start tilting 50/50 pucks back in his favour. A lot of it also comes from being healthy for the summer (oblique strain aside, which I think took some zip off his shot).

Rielly and Brodie have been on the ice now for 9 and 8 5-on-5 goals against respectively. The other 5 defencemen to suit up for the Leafs have been on for a combined 7. Maybe they're just waiting for Liljegren to come back but I think you gotta try something new with that pair.
