2024-25 General Trades and Signings

I appreciate Utah basically taking themselves mostly out of the defense UFA market, which should keep prices from getting too silly.

Tampa has paid a 3rd to gain exclusive negotiation rights with Jake Guentzal for today.

They must be confident they can get him signed if they?re willing to give up a pick with actual value.

I get tampering happens all the time, but man rough go for Carolina this offseason. Pesce has been rumoured to sign with NJ for like a week. And now despite meeting Guentzel's contract demands he all of a sudden gets cold feet right around the time Tampa leaks to the media that they'll be interested in him with all their new cap space.

So, what's going this year?  Seems to be more trades happening for "exclusive" negotiation rights than previous years.

Has the NHL made it clear that tampering will be punished?

If the rights are traded, are they still able to offer an 8 year deal before tomorrow?

Carolina can't offer Guentzal any contract right now because they no longer have his rights. If Guentzal's contractual rights expire (currently held by TB) he'll become a Free Agent at which point Carolina could offer a contract, but it will be maxed at 7 years. No idea why people in the media are continuing to get this wrong.

I guess theoretically Carolina could re-acquire Guentzal's rights before he becomes a FA and offer 8-years? Doesn't seem likely.

Life is hard for graphics departments this time of year

Boo. Hiss. Grr.

At 5'11", 174lbs, I didn't think he'd be very appealing for Treliving

Only rumour of substance I'd heard was him maybe going to the Oilers to rejoin his D partner Ekholm

Nashville still have a fair amount of cap space.

Interesting situation here. I think many expected Reinhart would be signing a somewhat team friendly extension with the Panthers. It still hasn't happened, and now unless the deal is done but just hasn't been announced they've lost the ability to go up to 8 years. Does that make it more likely Reinhart explores the market?

Nevermind I guess:

Unless the Leafs gave permission, this feels like tampering.

Reinhart will probably never hit those numbers again. Before last season he was a 30ish goals 65ish points player

Last 3 years:
Reinhart - 242GP 121G 122A 243P (28P in 43 playoff games) 41G 41A 82P/82GP
Marner - 221GP 91G 190A 281P  (17P in 18 playoff games) 34G 70A 104P/82GP

I don't think it's entirely a fair comparison to look at their numbers BUT it continues the trend of Leafs players getting what they are worth while other teams are seeing some discounts on their players.
