2024-25 General Trades and Signings

Was scrolling through the available UFAs and was pretty surprised to see Kevin Lankinen still unsigned. Solid numbers as a back-up goalie with Nashville the past couple years. Respectable numbers as a 1B option with Chicago in the 2 years prior to that. I'm guessing he wanted a raise on his previous $2mil AAV deal and just priced himself out of every option. Can't even find a team that makes sense for him right now. Tampa would probably love a real back-up goalie (shocked that they're currently set to go into the season with Jonas Johansson in that role AGAIN) but they're a bit tight on cap sace.

Patrik Laine has been cleared from his stint with the NHL player assistance program; this doesn't directly affect the Leafs, but his request for a change of scenery (plus some buyout windows opening for arbitration settlements/decisions) might kick start a second wind for the trade market.

Other pretty big tickets: Ehlers, Necas and whatever is not nailed down in Calgary (Weegar?)

There's one off the board

Man, LA Kings have very good defense drafting and very poor defensemen retention

Pretty nice deal for someone slated to be their #2D just before his ELC expires.

First NHL signing in a little bit. I remember really liking Kylington in his draft year (as did a bunch of people here) so I've always had a bit of a soft spot for him. Rooted for him a little more after he came back from his mental-health related absence. I would have liked him as a cheaper OEL or maybe even Liljegren replacement this offseason but ultimately get why the Leafs went the way they did.

Somewhat interesting that Colorado continues to buck the trend of getting bigger on defence. They of course have 6'3", 218 lbs Josh Manson. Mekar and Toews are elite defenders so their lack of size/physicality isn't really an issue. But they've now rounded out their defence with 5'10", 170 lbs Samuel Girard, 6'0", 183 lbs Oliver Kylington, and 5'10", 185 lbs Erik Brannstrom.

Fun! And firing it through official socials too

The offer to Broberg is for a two-year contract at $4,580,917 per year, the maximum offer that would require a second-round draft pick as compensation.

[...]

The offer to Holloway is for a two-year contract at $2,290,457 per year, the maximum offer that would require a third-round draft pick as compensation.

Spicy. Money is high for where the players are at in their development, but both are young and drafted in the upper half of the first round. The picks involved are probably close to their trade values. The second year on these deals make it a really interesting situation for the Oilers. They need that cap space to re-sign Draisaitl and Bouchard.

Double offer sheet against the same team! Increases the chances of getting one of them. EDM got some thinking to do.

I really wish more teams would do this.  Enough of the old-boys club "we can't do that" mentality, it's legal and it puts your opponent into an uncomfortable place to be.  If you're scared that another team may do it to you, all the more incentive to manage your cap very well so you don't end up like this.

It just makes so much sense especially for young RFAs who don't have arbitration rights on teams with no cap space. Heck even Nick Robertson should be exploring this option. Current compensation levels means he could sign a deal as high as $1.51mil with another team and that wouldn't even require a loss of a draft pick if the deal isn't matched. The Leafs could technically fit Robertson in at that number but it would require either shedding some cap space through trade or waivers with guys like Timmins and Holmberg and running a small roster. If he signs an offer sheet with a team as high as $2.29mil the Leafs would only get a 3rd as compensation but they might be forced to take it.

Dubas facilitated the offersheets (traded back St. Louis' 2025 2nd rounder for their 2026 and converted a 2026 5th to a 2025 3rd), and I wonder if he does the funny thing by taking on Ceci's expected cap dump for a sweetener or two so Edmonton can retain one of the RFAs at his new rate.

Shuffled off yet again, but he is consistently playing on yellow teams. Boston next? They love hoarding right handed centres.

I have seen the double offer-sheet suggested by bloggers so many times over the years but never seen it happen.  Should have happened more during the flat cap.
