There's one of the few players I'd be willing to trade the 5th overall pick for.
jonlleafs said:Yes, but I'd rather trade the 5th for J. Staal.

Pending UFA Jordan Staal who can't sign an extension until more than a week after the draft? Not without some sort of virtually ironclad assurance he'll sign on the dotted line on July 1st.

He's not a UFA. He's got 1yr left on his contract.

#5 overall for 1 year of J. Stall?

No, you're trading for him in the hopes of signing him to a multi-year deal. If you don't get his rights and he stays with Pitts, the chances are he will resign there or could be traded somewhere else to be signed to a long term deal. He's an Ontario boy so he'll probably want to sign long term with the Leafs.

It's asset management like that that will sink this team even further. I wouldn't trade #5 in "hope" of resigning J. Staal.

jonlleafs said:Are you serious? You would trade for him, knowing you get him for at least a year and sign him right away. Obviously, you would like some assurances from him that he has interest in signing with your team. But we did this with Kessel and we got him signed. Or would you much rather have a iron clad, long term contract ala Luongo before you did any deal? C'mon.

I think the more pressing concern is that he wants to hit UFA status and sign long term with whoever he pleases. If I'm dealing #5, it's not on a wing and a prayer.
jonlleafs said:Sure fine, let me re-word it. We put in the deal that we talk to him first and see if there is interest in signing or have a contract in place and once the deal goes through, he signs it. He can't sign an extension before the deal is made.

He also can't sign an extension until July 1st, which means, if this year's 1st round pick is involved in the deal, an extension can not be.
