Thomas Vanek traded to NYI

Vanek's good, really good, but he's not THAT good. Kovalchuk would have made $11M this year; Ovechkin makes $9 or 10M. I couldn't imagine shelling out that much for Vanek, even at a lower cap hit of around $7.1M (his current AAV.)

Vanek's in a similar ballpark to Kessel - maybe a little less due to the age difference. He'll get, and deserve, a contract that comes with a cap at around $8M per ($8M+ on the open market, a little less if he stays with the Islanders - somewhere in the $7.5M-$8M range).

It' always good when the player's performance definitely tells you who won the trade.

Moulson scored his 2nd shift in Buffalo tonight.  Congrats Buffalo, good job on this one.

Pfft. Where was he on the rest of his shifts? Fail.

That Tyler Myers extension is looking equally, if nor more, brutal, and 10 years for Ehrhoff . . .

Tyler Myers has to be the best example of why bridge contracts are, you know, advisable. I still can't get over that being signed after completing 2 years of his ELC.

I admit I was just joking before.  But now he has 2 in the game, so it's real.

This one game has clearly proven my entire position was wrong. My mind is definitely changed now.

I mean, if it wasn't for the fact that Vanek has a whopping 0 goals so far as an Islander you might still have a leg to stand on.

Yeah, but, you gotta love that infinite shooting percentage he's sporting for them so far.

Just out of curiosity, where would Vanek rank among NHL players? top 10? top 20? top 30?

I think top 20-30 among forwards. I'm not sure where that ranks among all players, but maybe - wild guess - top 40-50 range.

TSN had him ranked 49th in their top-50 NHL players ranking this year. Just looking at forwards he was 35th. And in ESPN's ranking this year they had him 31st. Neither list is perfect but that's probably about where he belongs.

He brings intangibles very few people bring - he can snipe the puck with the best of them and produce points (wasn't it just last year he was ripping it up early before he got hurt?) That alone will get him paid $8 mil+/per in the free agent market even though that ranking seems fairly accurate.

I love how Snow gambles like this cuz he isn't messing with our team. He threw away a couple of high draft picks and a player who proved he could play well with Tavares for an experiment - a supremely talented unpredictable rental. Who knows how this will end up?

I agree. I think the $7.5M is more appropriate given the age and that Kessel is still on an upward trend, even if it's very slight.
