I doubt it'll ever change since the players probably love it but it's very weird to me how the past few years with the flat cap we've seen guys not get qualifying offers because a team is terrified of the potential arbitration award and then on the open market that player signs for like half of what they were scared an arbitrator would give him.

The Leafs have of course both benefitted and been hurt by this.

Columbus has that New Jersey Devils aura to them where offensive players go to die.  I just can't see Gaudreau getting anything close to the 115 points there.
 
This feels like a perfect example of the Catch-22 of signing big ticket free agents. Like, it seems like a good deal for Columbus because they don't have any other guys besides Laine they're going to have to spend a ton on. The flip side is, like, what is Columbus now? They seem pretty mediocre also because they have no guys they need to spend a ton on and Gaudreau means they're probably not tanking to get there.

Like, just a weird one all around.
