2022-2023 NHL trades and signings

Not weird this is coming through the St. Louis beat at all, nope.

I feel somewhat sorry for Calgary fans.

It's been a tough week or so.

They've certainly got cap space now to do any deal that works now.

I just love that the narrative isn?t ?why does Tkachuk want to leave Calgary? it?s ?how screwed the leafs are because Matthews is going to 100% for sure leave the leafs?.

Unlike what some pundits are suggesting, I think Calgary takes their time on this one. There isn't a ton of urgency on their part - taking him to arbitration means Tkachuk is under contract for next season, so, lower risk of a holdout - and they'll want to extract the best return possible. This could easily drag on into the start of the season.

Most people saw this coming from a mile away though. It was pretty clear neither had much interest in signing long-term.

Depnds on how much Tkachuk wants to force the issue. He could easily say that if he goes to an arbitration hearing, he won't sign an extension when he is traded which could lower the return.

I dunno, I think there's something to be said about just getting it over with and moving on. Obviously his injury played a role in it too but look at the Eichel situation in Buffalo where it just dragged on and on and on and on. There's also a risk here too of Tkachuk potentially getting hurt early in the season if he doesn't get dealt and then there goes his value.

Talk to the interested teams, make it clear there's a team-imposed deadline of wanting him dealt, play the offers off each other, and just take the best one. They aren't winning the trade anyway regardless of what the return ends up being.

Pretty sure he's gone by the end of the month. Over and done with, so Calgary has the offseason to recover and manage expectations and start to integrate any new pieces that come from this move. A sign and trade at this point would probably net the best return (8 years, slightly lower AAV).

Lots of cash to splash, but only Kadri and Niederreiter left on the UFA front. Maybe they pivot now and send out their Anderssons and Mangiapanes and Lindholms to build a younger star core.

If this is the ?new NHL? that?s going to significantly weaken my interest in the game, or for following a specific team. Yes, I guess I begrudge the power the players have, now to the point of me being hypocritical for sure.  If I?m a Flames fan I?m devastated. If 34 leaves I?d be very discouraged as the Leafs have rarely had a player like him vs the rest of the league.

There needs to stop a being focus on Matthews leaving. If it happens it happens, just enjoy the time he?s here instead of worrying about the hypothetical years that he?s not. By that time he?ll have been with the leafs for 8 seasons. Enjoy them.

What power? The power to not sign a contract? To be upfront with their teams about their long term intentions so they can trade them and get a return?

There is no way to design a system where players have free agency that won't see some players choose to leave via free agency.

I've been waiting for this one to drop. Always been a fan of Nino, and this seems like a very good fit for him.

The power to not be treated like indentured servants, I guess. Also, the players are the game. They should have a fair share of the power here. Without them, we don't have a league.

Trying to get Jordan Kyrou out of St. Louis would probably be the best case scenario for the Flames at this point. That or just like multiple 1st rounders if they're just going to go more quick full scorched rebuild. That would probably be the better play but I'm guessing they don't go that route.

Kyrou would be a good move for sure but does St Louis do it? They don't exactly have a lot of cap space so adding 9M is going to take some moves. I would think they'd wait until next year when Tarasenko, O'Rielly come off the books.

This guy went to the draft in Montreal with the firm belief that he would be traded to the Habs then and there.
