I'm actually a little surprised he didn't just take his qualifying offer when he had the chance. That feels like the highest an arbitrator would award him anyway, and it's probably a little more likely he gets a bit below it.

It looks like NJD didn't tender him the QO and were the ones who elected for arbitration.
Edit: no you're right, they did QO him. Was he trying to save them some money?

They had to have tendered him a QO in order to have arbitration as an option. Otherwise, he'd be a UFA.

Looks like he never had the chance. The Devils filed for arbitration the same day they filed the QO.

Huh... I actually didn't realize they could do that. Always thought the qualifying offer came before any chance of filing for arbitration specifically so a player had a chance to accept it, but you're right that's not the case.

Guess I didn't realize since it's so rare for a team to file for arbitration these days.

Ah, that explains it

Did Spezza ever get the old-man bonus?

We could sign some veterans to value deals to hit the cap floor and eat salary at the deadline.  No that would be stupid.  Let's overpay a 25 year old with a career high of 34 points (next best 25)

Krejci made official too. The Bruins definitely missed him at 2C last season since they never really even tried replacing him.

Another year older so their contribution is always liable to decline but that's two pretty great signings.

Subban is still unsigned. I find this kind of odd. Has his play really fallen that much?

He's not a $9mil player anymore, but is still more than adequate as a 3rd pair guy.  I wonder if it's more so pride, or if it's just injuries has taken a toll on him.

I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up back in Montreal on a league min deal.

I thought he retired? This is kind of bizarre.

Didn't retire. Went back home to play in the Czech league for a season (where he led his team in scoring). That also gave him the opportunity to participate in the Olympics. But there was always a possibility he'd return to Boston.

Iirc he did say he wanted to be closer to home. Rings a bit hollow now, no?

There's probably still like a dozen UFAs who would all be pretty solid contributors at the right price (which should be easy to get them at now) that I'm genuinely surprised haven't signed yet.
