When a team asks you if you want a top pairing defenceman for just a 3rd rounder you say yes and run. You don't try to get cute and say they should throw in a 5th as well. I'm all for calling Benning a bad GM but I don't get the criticisms on this one.

Some people just like to complain about everything and anything. I think almost every GM that needed D would have jumped at Schmidt for a 3rd. A top 4, 30 point D man that can play both sides, what's not to like?CarltonTheBear said:

Who's this Marshall guy? CC is worth 1.25 in a defensive role. A little more then I'd pay but it's not an outrageous overpayment.herman said:

His underlying numbers are better than fine. When asked to produce offense, he produced offense on a moribund lineup with bum minutes. When asked to play more defensively, he put up great shot suppression metrics. He plays a style that I like watching and that matches the Leafs.
By now, we've seen how easily players can have their careers derailed because their coach or organization didn't like how they did certain things. And we've certainly seen players of colour being targeted or held to a completely different unreasonable standard, while white players will go to unusual lengths to PR-rehab a kid with a long history of racial bullying and assault.
Call it a market inefficiency, if you will, on a player that was touted to be comparable with Connor McDavid's skill level coming up through the GTHL.
