Reshaping, yes. To the point of appreciably moving the needle? They?ll be better than dead last, but I don?t see playoff contender.

Yup. If they sign Giroux, they?ll moved into the lower end of the mushy middle. Without Giroux, they?re just a different looking bad team.

I don't know.  There's talk they are going to get a top 4 dman like Chychrun or Weegar.  Also they have Sanderson on the way.  They also have a couple of intriguing prospects in Ridley Gregg and Shane Pinto.  If they add a piece like Giroux they could be pushing for a spot.

I think I would say these are their best and most important players who all happen to be at or below Nylander level. Obviously defense is a different equation.

Brady Tkachuk -- Willy level (maybe) --
Alex DeBrincat
Tim Stutzle
Drake Batherson

Thomas Chabot
Jake Sanderson

There is also Norris who had 35 goals in 66 games.  I mean Willy level is kind of an obscure measurement.  Batherson was almost a point per game last year and Stutzle is a 3rd overall pick that turned it up a notch in the second half of the year.  He could be primed for a breakout season.  DeBrincat has scored 40 goals twice in his career.

On defence they have a guy by Artem Zub who is pretty good in a shutdown roll.  If they round that out with another top 4 dman and a guy like Giroux then that could start to put them towards the top of the teams that could challenge for a playoff spot.

I mean we don't like it when Sens fans come on this board to troll us.  I figure the decent thing to do is give credit where credit is due

Malkin to hit free agency.

Negotiating tactic. He?ll stay in Pittsburgh

There was a part of me that would have loved to see Malkin in a different uniform because I think he would have had an absolutely bonkers season just to prove the Penguins wrong about letting him walk, but having him spend his entire career in Pittsburgh does feel right.

I said a week or so ago that if they spend a little closer to the cap they have potential to at least get into the playoff conversation. Since then they've added DeBrincat, will likely add Giroux by the sounds of it, stabilized their goaltending situation, are in talks to apparently add Weegar. And who knows what else. A lot of their immediate success will also depend on if Stutzle is ready to take another step forward in his development, and if both Forsberg and Talbot are able to repeat having above average goaltending seasons, but they're having a good offseason.

Not trolling or disparaging them. They're trending upward. But I don't see why they'd want to trend up now, and not even exponentially, on the cusp of one of the most talented drafts this side of 2015 & 2003.

Last season they scored 224/249 goals for/against. Boston made the cut off with 253/205 and significantly better defensive numbers. I think DeBrincat and Giroux safely add at least 30 goals between them, but a -25 to +50 swing in differential is HUGE.

I can agree with you that like the Leafs way back when they might be exiting the rebuild stage a year too early, but that's an entirely separate conversation I guess.

Thinking Ottawa could make a playoff run is based off the assumption that the 4th place team in the Atlantic won't finish that high again this year. And with all of Boston's injuries, even if they get both Bergeron and Krejci back, I think it's reasonable to say they'll be taking some sort of step back this upcoming season. If Boston drops back into say the mid or high 90's then their playoff spot isn't exactly guaranteed anymore. So Ottawa wouldn't need to go from -25 to +50 because the cutoff almost certainly won't be 107 points again. Although even getting into the 90s will be a big increase from their last season but adding two top-6 forwards for nothing from their team can probably make up for a lot of that.

Again though, we need to see what actually happens in the next few days with some of their rumoured moves.

I think the issue with Ottawa is that they're lacking the primary talent needed to be more than an also-ran. They have a ton of great secondary pieces, but I don't see anyone on the roster who has shown they can be "the guy." They'll be a tough team to play against, but I don't think they're god enough to be serious threat to a playoff spot this season.

Evander Kane gets more money, just awesome.

And Edmonton gets a ridiculously lucky break with Keith retiring based on equally ridiculous cap rules after making that horrendous deal to take on his whole contract.

That's a very reasonable contract for the Oilers to have signed him to.  Surprised they only had to pay him that much, to be honest.

Would have been interested in him for the Leafs, depending on the price.

If Ottawa snags McAvoy from Boston, then they're in.

Sure. Meanwhile, back in the real world...

Least surprising signing. Good luck behind that defence, Jack.
